Rumors for St. Louis Cardinals

A source close to FOXSports’ Jon Paul Morosi says that he would be very surprised if the Detroit Tigers traded third baseman Brandon Inge before Tuesday’s deadline.

The St. Louis Cardinals were tracking Inge earlier this month, but any deal was nixed once the team acquired Pedro Feliz from the Houston Astros.

Inge, 33, is in the final year of a four-year contract. He’s making $6.6 million this season and hitting .257/.335/.409 with 8 home runs and 51 RBIs in 111 games for the Tigers this season.

11-year play-by-play veteran for the St. Louis Cardinals television broadcasts and the primary play-by-play guy for Cardinals’ Fox Sports Midwest telecasts, Dan McLaughlin, was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, according to police (via Christine Byers of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch).

McLaughlin was arrested on Monday night about 10:45 pm on Highway 40 after an officer responded to a report of an erratic driver. McLaughlin refused to take a breathalyzer test and was arrested. He was booked at Chesterfield police headquarters and la ter released.

Cardinals vice president Dan Farrell, who oversees the club’s broadcasting operations, and Fox Sports Midwest spokesman Geoff Goldman also declined comment.

A hearing has been set for October 6 for McLaughlin’s case.

Alyson Footer of MLB.com tweets that the St. Louis Cardinals have acquired third baseman Pedro Feliz and from the Houston Astros in exchange for pitcher David Carpenter.

The Cardinals were in need of third base depth to compensate for the injury to David Freese.

Houston Astros RHP David Carpenter

Feliz, 35, was hitting .222/.244/.312 with 4 home runs with the Astros. He signed a one-year, $4.5 million contract with the Astros in December

Carpenter, 25, was originally a 12th round (376th overall) pick of the Cardinals in the June 2006 First-Year Player Draft. He was originally a catcher, but was converted to a pitcher in the middle of 2008. He was named the 2009 Quad Cities River Bandits Pitcher of the Year (Single-A Midwest League). Carpenter is 5-3 with a 2.36 ERA for Palm Beach Cardinals, the High-A team in the Florida State League. Ben Badler of Baseball America says Carpenter is a fringy/org-type reliever with a 91-95 mph fastball and a below average breaking ball.

Sources close to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports say the St. Louis Cardinals have interest in Houston Astros’ infield Geoff Blum, but nothing is serious at the moment.

On the funnier side of baseball, Blum injured himself in early July while getting dressed. Tests conducted at a local hospital on the elbow showed “loose bodies.”

The Cardinals are in need of third base depth to compensate for the injury to David Freese. The Cardinals are said to have Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge on their radar.

Buster Olney of ESPN says that there is a perception among some general managers that the San Francisco Giants are trying to prevent third basemen from reaching the St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves in the waiver process.

Right now players need to clear waivers in order for teams to freely negotiate trade deals. Players such as Geoff Blum of the Houston Astros and Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers are two such players that can traded freely since they both cleared waivers. Olney reported that both players cleared waivers yesterday. (Confused? Check out our guide on making trades this month here.)

Both the Cardinals and Braves are short in third base depth due to injuries to starters David Freese and Chipper Jones, respectively. The Cardinals are said to have Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge on their radar.

Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said the Cardinals asked about Counsell, but backed off.

Buster Olney of ESPN has a couple of suggestions for teams that are in need of third base depth such as the St. Louis Cardinals and the Atlanta Braves. Geoff Blum and Craig Counsell, according to Olney, have cleared waivers. The Astros and Brewers are free to negotiate a trade with any MLB team should they decide to move these players.

Blum, 37 and currently with the Houston Astros, is making $1.5 million this year, and is hitting .266/.327/.325 this year.

Counsell, 40 this week and currently with the Milwaukee Brewers, is making $2.1 million this season and is hitting .246/.14/.305.

According to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals GM John Mozeliak has tried to lower expectations for a trade, but the club has retained interest in Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge.

Inge was placed on waivers earlier this month, but was pulled back when another team claimed him. The Tigers have the option to place Inge on waivers again, but they will not have the option to revoke him. (The waiver process doesn’t make sense? No worries. We have a write-up that explains how players can be traded in August. Check it out here.)

The Cards are in need of a third baseman due to the recent injury to David Freese and the poor performance of Felipe Lopez as of late.

Inge, 33, is hitting .255/.330/.400 in 97 games for the Tigers this season. He is making $6.6 million in the final-year of his four-year contract.

Here’s a quick run down of Ken Rosenthal’s latest MLB Full Count video:

-Manny Ramirez is improving health wise and it is possible that he could go out on a rehab assignment within the next week.  It is safe to say that the only interest in him given his injuries this season would come from an AL Team (so he could DH and stay away from the field).  Rosenthal speculates that the Red Sox could potentially put a claim in on Manny just to block other contenders like the Rays from obtaining him since they have the worst record (66-51) between the Yanks and Rays and them.  Call me crazy, but I don’t think a reunion with Boston is in Manny’s future.

-The Cardinals are looking for help at 3rd base due to the injury to David Freese.  They plan to give Allen Craig some reps at 3rd base but will also continue to keep a look out on the wavier wire.  The Cardinals (also the Braves) were rumored to have interest in Brandon Inge to cover 3rd for them but Inge was pulled off of waivers yesterday.

-Dusty Baker who is in the final year of his contract has led the Reds to a 65-51 record this year and are currently 1 game back in the Central and are tied for the Wild Card lead.  Baker’s success this year could end up forcing the Reds to give him a substantial raise or could force Dusty to take his managing services else where.

-One manager who will almost for sure not return next year is the Mets Jerry Manuel.  The Mets have under achieved and are 9 games back in the east.  With the Mets managing spot available next year, could Joe Torre be interested in it?  Rosenthal speculates that Torre could return to New York and really stick to the Yankees by winning it all with the Mets.  The Mets are saddled with bad contracts next year to and may not have much wiggle room to sign the impact players that they need which may make Torre turn down the job.
