Rumors for San Francisco Giants

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, Giants VP, Bobby Evans, spoke with Tim Lincecum’s agent and told him that he was still in the long-term picture for them. “Obviously we’ll be looking toward that in the future.”

The Giants recently signed right hander Matt Cain, 27, to a six-year, $127.5 deal and regardless of the start Lincecum is having this year, if he manages to stay healthy, any deal for him should at least match Cain’s deal.

“The Freak” has managed to stay healthy throughout his career, but the lower mph in his fastball could be an indication of an injury, even if he hasn’t said anything, but if that’s the case the Giants would have to evaluate how severe that injury would be and if he can comeback to his normal standards. The Giants also extended left handed pitcher Madison Bumgarner yesterday to a five-year, $35 million deal.

Lincecum, 27, is off to a rough start this season, but the two-time Cy Young award winner is a career 69-43 with 3.08 ERA, 0.6 HR/9, 3.3 BB/9 and 9.9 SO/9 in 1041.2 innings throughout sis years with the Giants.

The San Francisco Giants have agreed to a five-year deal with left handed pitcher Madison Bumgarner according to Alex Pavlovic of the San Francisco Mercury News. He adds that the deal includes options for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Bumgarner’s agents said the deal is worth $35 million. The 22-year old has a career record of 21-22 with a 3.12 ERA in 337 innings with the Giants in four seasons. His career HR/9 is 0.7, his SO/9 7.8 and his BB/9 2.1.

Here’s a running list of injury updates around the Major Leagues:

– Giants closer Brian Wilson will require Tommy John surgery and will miss the reminder of the 2012 season according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle. He adds that Wilson looks at this surgery as “an opportunity to get a better arm and throw harder.”

Skip Schumaker could be back with the Cardinals this week according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post. The outfielder, who suffered a strained oblique during a Spring Training game, began his rehab assignment yesterday at Memphis adds Goold.

– According to Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine, outfielder Carl Crawford will probably play his first Spring Training game tomorrow (via Brian MacPherson of the Providence Journal). Crawford suffered a setback while recovering from a wrist surgery, but he’s been taking a lot of batting practice lately according to Valentine.

– Twins General Manager, Terry Ryan, hopes that Nick Blackburn will be able to make his next start after his MRI came back “looking normal” reports Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “All indications are that he’s going to be OK, but we’re certainly going to be cautious,” Ryan said. Blackburn was pulled out in the sixth inning of his Saturday’s start with shoulder stiffness, but according to Christensen, the team believes the stiffness was caused by a cramp.

As some of you know, the guys from 2K Sports have this contest where you can receive $1 million for throwing the first perfect game in the MLB 2K game. This year, T.J. Brida was in the 14th inning of a perfect game when he gave up the first hit of the game to Pirates’ Jose Tabata according to Owen Good of Kotaku.com.

As Good points out, “the minimum requirement to advance is retiring 27 consecutive batters. Brida, using Roy Halladay of his beloved Phillies, sat down 40. But he didn’t get the last one.”

“Trust me, I was pretty pissed,” Brida told Good. Brida failed to score during 13 innings and that’s why he didn’t win the contest. On the website, there’s a nine minute video that begins in the bottom of the ninth and ends when Brida “punches the power button, and the screen goes dark.”

Looks like Matt Cain will be a San Francisco Giant for many years to come.  According to an official release by the San Francisco Giants, the team has signed Cain to a five-year extension.  The deal will guarantee the pitcher $112.5 million through 2017 with a vesting option for 2018. Cain’s 2018 vesting option for $21 million will kick in with 200 inings pitched in 2017 or 400 innings in 2016-2017.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports adds by Twitter, “Cain’s new deal replaces old one. Six yrs, $127.5M with vesting player opt for ‘18 that can bring total to $141M over seven. Full no-trade.”

“Ensuring that Matt remained a Giant beyond this season was a top priority for the organization,” GM Brian Sabean said. “Matt is an integral part of the team whose performance on the mound will be one of the keys to our success for years to come.”

“The success of our franchise depends on developing and retaining homegrown talent like Matt Cain,” said Giants’ president and CEO Larry Baer. “I want to commend Brian Sabean, Bobby Evans, Matt and his representatives for their hard work to keep Matt in the Orange and Black. This is an exciting day for Giants fans everywhere and a fantastic way to kick off the 2012 season.”

Last week, PRO Rumors’ Juan Dominguez (@JuanchoXIII), compared Cain’s numbers with Felix Hernandez’s numbers (tweet 1, tweet 2, tweet 3).
