Rumors for Oakland Athletics

Billy Beane and the Oakland Athletics signed left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson and catcher Kurt Suzuki to long-term deals to ensure the organization’s youth would be around during their prime years. However, the A’s have an ever-growing list of young talent that needs to be signed before the teams with the larger check books can get to them.

The Contra Costa Times says that among those players starters Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez and closer Andrew Bailey should be on the short list of players to sign… now.

“You sort of take them one at a time,” general manager Billy Beane said, without mentioning specific players the A’s would consider. ” “… There are some young players here who are going to be in the big leagues a long time. To keep things going, we’ll have to consider (signing them long-term) for cost-control reasons.” Read More→

The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo says the Red Sox have spoken with free-agent-to-be, Victor Martinez , regarding a two-year contract. Carfardo suggests that the Sox are trying to throw something out there to let him know that they want him, and keep him away from free agency.

Last month, Cafardo said that there have been preliminary talks regarding an extension with Martinez. At the time, he said that Martinez may fall into the four-year, $60 million range, and the Sox may not believe he may be worth that.

The Sox made an attempt at acquiring Los Angeles Angels catcher-first baseman Mike Napoli, but the deal fell through. Napoli would like to get the opportunity to play everyday. If the teams could work out a deal this winter, he could be a cheaper option for the Sox. Napoli could be signed to a long-term deal between what the Colorado Rockies’ three-year, $8.35 million deal with Chris Iannetta and the Oakland Athletics’ four-year, $16.25 million deal with Kurt Suzuki (approximately $3-4 million per season).

In a text message to San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser, Eric Chavez said that he’ll be in Oakland next Friday. When he returns he said he expects there will be a meeting that day to go over what’s next for him.

Earlier this month, Chavez said he is “pondering retirement” as he recovers from two bulging disks in his neck.

The 32-year-old has been limited to designated hitter duties this season. He is in the final year of his six-year, $66 million contract, and the A’s are unlikely to pick up his $12.5 million option for next season.

There were rumors back in May that indicated that he was retiring. At the time Slusser found out via text message that Chavez was not retiring. Read More→

8/21 08:19: Looks like there’s more to this story. 21-year-old ball boy, Kevin Fennell, ended up giving the girl, Jacki Lynch, five balls that evening. The last ball read, “How about a phone number for our Ball Man, Kevin?”

According to Jane Lee of MLB.com, the two are going out for drinks next week.

Not a bad night for Lynch who was attending her first A’s game with her college friends.

8/20 01:46: Okay.. bad headline, but it’s FRIDAY!!!

Maybe Bo Wyble from last week’s Houston Astros‘ game could learn a few things here (hint: catch the ball then give it to the girl). Check out Kevin the ball boy at the Oakland A’s game on Thursday night trying to make friends with a girl in the stands – twice.

Maybe it was because the Tampa Bay Rays and Evan Longoria was in town. Longoria has creative ways to find girls too.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says the Pirates are “really strong” favorites to land 16-year-old right-handed pitcher Luis Heredia of the Mexican Baseball League.

Kovacevic adds, “barring some drastic change, it is expected that there will be an agreement executed rather quickly between the Pirates, Veracruz and the player. And that agreement most likely will be completed today (Thursday).”

Other teams believed to be interested in Heredia included the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves.

On Tuesday, Kovacevic added that Heredia’s bonus could be in the $2 million – $2.8 million range.

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette says the Pirates are a strong favorite to land Mexican 16-year-old right-hander Luis Heredia.

No formal offers can be entertained by Heredia’s Veracruz team until Thursday per the declaration by the Mexican Baseball League. The Pirates likely won’t be alone in the pursuit of the right-hander. Kovacevic says the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves all scouted Heredia pitching in a tournament for players age 15-16 last week in Mazatlan, Mexico. It won’t be cheap for any of the teams. Some reports have Heredia’s bonus value in the $2 million – $2.8 million range.

Kovacevic points out that the Pirates are heavily invested in the youngster:

  • The team has been scouting him since he was 13 years old.
  • The team’s Mexican scouting supervisor, Jesus Valdez has known Heredia since he was give and has become a father figure in Heredia’s life.
  • The Pirates have close ties to Heredia’s club, Veracruz. Kovacevic says, “In Mexico, a professional team selling a player’s rights keeps 75 percent of the bonus, with the other 25 percent going to the player.”

Former Major League player, Jose Canseco, has signed a deal a deal with the Loredo Broncos of the independent United League Baseball to be the team’s bench coach and designated hitter. Check out the newscast from Patrick Nelson of Pro 8 News:

This isn’t the first time Canseco tried independent ball. According to the Wikipedia, Canseco signed a deal in June 2006 with the Golden Baseball League to play with the San Diego Surf Dawgs. He was traded less than a week later to the Long Beach Armada due to “family obligations’.

Last week, it was reported that Canseco was evicted and was living in somebody’s garage. His Twitter account said, “I have lost everything. Makes you wanna cry but there’s no crying in baseball.and my dad said men don’t cry but he was wrong”

The Oakland A’s have a few questions to answer as soon as the season is done. Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle says one of the decisions the team will have to make is whether to pick up the options for Coco Crisp, Mark Ellis, Eric Chavez and manager Bob Geren.

Crisp is a good bet to return, Slusser Says. He has an option for $5.75 million and is an excellent defensive player and can handle hitting in the leadoff spot.

Ellis has an option at $6 million, and might be the biggest question mark. “Obviously, I’d like to stay here,” Ellis said, “but I’m not even going to think about it until they do something. Last time, I thought about it, and it didn’t do me any good.” He has been with the team for nine years and is a front-office favorite.

Chavez is unlikely going to return considering how little he has been able to play. He has a $12.5 million team option, but the team will likely buyout the option for $500,000.

Slusser says that Geren will likely be back. “I don’t concern myself with things like that,” Geren said before Sunday’s game. “I’m a day-to-day kind of guy.”
