FOXSports’ Jon Paul Morosi says the Arizona Diamondbacks’ list of potential general manager candidates is starting to take shape. According to sources close to Morosi, the Diamondbacks plan to speak with the following six people:
- Jerry Dipoto, Diamondbacks interim GM
- Peter Woodfork, Diamondbacks assistant GM

- Logan White, Dodgers assistant GM for amateur and international scouting
Sources says that the Diamondbacks’ superiors were happy with the job that Dipoto did at the July 31st trade deadline. Among Dipoto’s accomplishments this season are: Dan Haren trade with the Los Angeles Angels, Edwin Jackson trade with the Chicago White Sox, Chad Qualls trade with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Chris Snyder trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Could the Chicago White Sox sign Manny Ramirez in 2011?
Posted by: | Comments
Although Manny Ramirez has yet to play one game for the Chicago White Sox, questions are already popping up as far as what he’ll do next year.
‘I go into this with an open mind,” Williams said. ”He is our DH right now. Let’s see how it goes; let’s see how he fits. Let’s see how we all end up and what we have to work with dollarwise next year. But that’s 2011. ‘Let’s worry about 2010 now’ is my message to everyone.”
Ramirez is a free agent after this season, and his future salary could come down to what he does for the White Sox this last month of the season. He’s been injured for much of this year, and because he’ll have the opportunity to get at-bats without being a defensive liability by playing DH, it may help him secure a decent deal this off-season.
He made $20 million this season, but given his lackluster year, it’ll be tough for him to find something that big. However, you can’t count out his agent, Scott Boras. Boras has been known to create value for his clients.

Andruw Jones wants to play until 2015

Chicago White Sox outfielder and designated, Andruw Jones, wants to bring his career to an even 20 years of service by playing five more years. He wants to start that journey by playing with the Sox at least for the 2011 season.
“Hopefully, I can be here because we have good chemistry going,” Jones told MLB.com (via Scott Merkin). “You know, I would love to play more [this season], but I knew when I signed my contract here, I know what my role was going to be.
I accepted it. I would like to be here again and be a part of the Chicago White Sox. Hopefully, we can finish strong and make the playoffs and get on a streak.”
Now that the White Sox have Manny Ramirez, it may be difficult for Jones to find playing time. Read More→
Update – No deal to trade Mike Napoli from Angels to Red Sox
Posted by: | Comments
8/29 14:14: According to a source close to Alex Speier of WEEI says the Red Sox and the Angels did not reach an agreement to trade catcher Mike Napoli despite the Sox being awarded a waiver claim.
A second source close to Speier said the Angels were “not really looking to move” Napoli right now.
8/29 17:21: The Angels will likely pull Napoli back as they can create more of a trade market for him over the winter, a league source told John Tomase of the Boston Herald. The Red Sox had interest in Napoli but also needed to put a claim in to block the Rays from obtaining him.
8/29 14:50: According to ESPN’s Joe McDonald, the Boston Red Sox have claimed Mike Napoli. McDonald adds that is is unlikely the Red Sox will complete a deal.
8/28 23:01: Major League sources close to FOXSports.com say that Los Angeles Angels catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli was claimed on trade waivers by an unknown team. The Angels and the claiming team now have until Monday afternoon to work out a deal.
Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports says the team is probably another American League club. Possible candidates include the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox and the Texas Rangers. All of those teams could use help at catcher, first base and/or designated hitter.
Since the return of catcher Jeff Mathis from the disabled list in June, Napoli has spent more time at first base.
Napoli is earning $3.6 million this season and is on track to be a free agent after the 2012 season. He is hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 60 RBIs in 112 games.
Conflicting reports on Manny Ramirez trade waiver situation?

There are a few conflicting reports on the Manny Ramirez trade waiver situation. In near simultaneous tweets:
The White Sox say no deal has yet been finalized for Manny, meaning that this may not be a waiver claim, after all. (Bob Nightengale, USA Today)
Dodgers sending Manny to #WhiteSox on strict waiver claim. WSox take all $3.8M. LA gets no players back. More to come at ESPN.com (Jayson Stark, ESPN)
The teams talked about scenarios where #Dodgers would have paid up to $1.5M of contract depending on prospect they got. Never agreed on that (Jayson Stark, ESPN)
FWIW (for what it’s worth), Manny Ramirez’s info is not in today’s White Sox game notes at this time (Scott Merkin, MLB.com)

Colorado Rockies looking for a reliever?
Posted by: | Comments
The Colorado Rockies sit 4 1/2 games out in the Wild Card and it looks like they may be on the look out for relief help to make a run. According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, the Rockies are looking for a relief pitcher. Heyman adds that they may settle for a “change-of-scenery” type of reliever.
Last week, Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun said pitchers Jason Frasor, Scott Downs, Kevin Gregg and Shawn Camp of the Toronto Blue Jays did not clear waivers. It still is unknown which team or teams were awarded the waiver claim. Unless the Rockies were one of the claiming teams, it’s unlikely that they will be able to acquire of the Jays’ pitchers.
The Chicago White Sox and the Philadelphia Phillies are also known to be actively looking for relief pitching. The deadline to set your postseason rosters is August 31st, so teams have a little more than 24 hours to make the moves to get them into the playoffs.
Brewers Trevor Hoffman is available

Teams have only two days left to acquire that last player that they need before the deadline. Players acquired after the deadline can only help the team reach the playoffs as they will be ineligible for the playoffs. Recently, we have heard that the White Sox, Reds and Phillies were looking to upgrade their respective bullpens. At this time of the year though, every playoff team is looking for a new arm either for the rotation or for the bullpen.
The Blue Jays have many bullpen arms that intrigue other clubs. The problem is Jason Frasor, Scott Downs, Kevin Gregg and Shawn Camp did not clear waivers. So unless the claiming team is a contending team that needs bullpen help, they won’t be able to acquire any of these arms.
Here is an idea. Why not go after a future Hall of Famer who has cleared waivers and can be traded to any team. Why not go after one of the greatest closers in the history of the game. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that the Brewers Trevor Hoffman, has cleared waivers and is available. The problem is no one is calling Brewers GM Doug Melvin’s phone.
Hoffman this year has been up-and-down with more downs than ups. He sports a 6.21 ERA. One thing interested clubs should look at is in his last 10 outings, he has not given up a run in 8 of those appearances (9 innings, 4 runs).
Hoffman is making $7.5mm this season and has a limited no-trade clause to 25 teams. Hoffman does have a career ERA of 2.87.
