Rumors for Boston Red Sox
Carlos Delgado has tear in left hip – retirement on the horizon?
Posted by: | Comments
It looks like the Boston Red Sox – Carlos Delgado experiment is over. According to Delgado’s agent (via Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald), David Sloane, the first baseman was diagnosed with a small tear in his left him.
Delgado signed a Minor League deal with the Boston Red Sox and had been preparing to make a comeback at Triple-A Pawtucket before he suffered this injury. He left Pawtucket to be examined by Dr. Marc Phillipon, the doctor who performed his previous hip surgeries.
“He’s extremely disappointed,” Sloane told the Boston Herald. “It would be tough for a human being to not be disappointed. He wouldn’t be human if he wasn’t very upset about it.”
Delgado had the option to opt-out of his contract on September 1st, but as of yesterday, he has decided to remain with the club. The PawSox have only a handful of games left this season, so it’s unlikely that Delgado will have enough time to rehab to join the Major League roster. Read More→
Carlos Delgado remains with Red Sox despite opt-out clause
Posted by: | Comments
Yesterday, we discussed the chances of two-time All-Star first baseman Carlos Delgado returning to the Big Leagues. He’s has not played with the Boston Red Sox Triple-A Pawtucket team since August 15 and is currently on the team’s disabled list.
Today ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes said that Delgado remains with the organization despite having a September 1 opt-out clause on his agreement with the Red Sox. The PawSox have only six games left in the season, and given the few games that Delgado has played in, it’s unlikely that he’ll be called up to the Majors this season.
Delgado flew to Colorado today to consult with his surgeons regarding the discomfort he has been experiencing in his left hip. He was signed in early August to provide the Sox insurance at first base. He has gone 3-for-13 since his return to professional baseball. Delgado, coming off arthroscopic surgery on his right hip, has not played since May 10, 2009.
Update – Atlanta Braves holding onto Troy Glaus – will recall INF on Wednesday
Posted by: | Comments
8/31 23:16: FOXSports’ Ken Rosenthal says the Braves are not trading Glaus. Rather the team is recalling him Wednesday.
8/29 10:05: Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports says a trade of Atlanta Braves’ infielder Troy Glaus is possible. One Major League source close to Morosi says multiple teams have shown interest in Glaus and he could fit in for teams with needs at first base and/or designated hitter. Candidates for such as need include the Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers.
There are approximately two days left before the August 31st deadline to set post season rosters and many of the contenders are trying to round out their rosters in preparation for a World Series run.
Glaus was placed on the disabled list earlier this month, and is currently on a Minor League rehabilitation assignment where he’s hitting .391 with two home runs and 8 RBIs in six games. He’s hitting .239 with 16 home runs and 70 RBIs with the big league club in 115 games this season. He carries a balance of about $300,000 should a team pick him up for September.
Texas Rangers NOT likely to acquire Boston Red Sox Mike Lowell

8/31 15:22: A club official close to MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan said “Nothing is happening with Lowell.”
8/31 14:26: MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan says the Texas Rangers are in talks with the Boston Red Sox for Mike Lowell. Sullivan says the conversations “have heated up.”
The talks between the Rangers and Red Sox for Lowell started last winter. At the time, the two teams agreed to a deal that would have sent Lowell to the Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez. However, because Lowell needed surgery to his thumb, the deal was called off. The two teams revisited the deal this summer, but they are becoming more serious as the deadline approaches.
Earlier today we heard the Rangers are talking with the Mets for Jeff Francouer, but Sullivan says the Rangers main target appears to be Lowell.
In his limited play this season, Lowell is hitting .234/.309/.373 with 4 home runs and 20 RBIs.
Is Carlos Delgado’s experiment with Boston Red Sox over?

Two-time All-Star first baseman Carlos Delgado has not played with the Boston Red Sox Triple-A pawtucket team since August 15, so you have to wonder if the experiment is over. According to Ron Chimelis of The Republican, Delgado’s hip problems are sidelining him and the “experiment looks doomed.”
However, according to Brian MacPherson of The Providence Journal, PawSox manager Torey Lovulio says that his “gut feeling” is that Delgado will be ready to play soon.
“He’s taking it easy right now,” Lovullo said. “He’s getting his work done. … It’s typical soreness, expected soreness. It’s nothing, from any standpoint, that’s going to shut him down. It’s nothing from the (surgically) repaired area. It’s all just lower-back stiffness.”
Delgado was signed in early August to provide the Sox insurance at first base. He has been 3-for-13 since his return to professional baseball. Delgado, coming off arthroscopic surgery on his right hip, has not played since May 10, 2009. If he is not on the active roster by September 1, he can become a free agent.
Will Mike Napoli be a Los Angeles Angel in 2011? Revisit talks with Boston this winter?
Posted by: | Comments
Although catcher-first baseman Mike Napoli is under team control through 2012, he isn’t too sure if he’ll be with the team next season, according to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles Times.
Napoli said, “It could go either way; I’d say it’s 50-50.”
“I want to play every day,” Napoli continued. “I feel I could potentially help the team a lot by being in there every day. I just like to play. … I’m not in there again today.”
Napoli was almost traded to the Boston Red Sox on Monday, but the two teams could not come to an agreement after the Sox made a waiver claim on Napoli.
The Angels home run leader is clearly frustrated by his lack of playing time. “Yeah,” said Napoli, who shares catching duties with Jeff Mathis and the first base job with Juan Rivera. “I’m having one of the best years of my career, and I’m not playing much. I guess I don’t get it done on the defensive side. I have to clean things up.”
Despite leading the team in home runs he also leads the team with 108 strikeouts (7th most in the American League).
“I’m an Angel now,” Napoli said. “I want to help this team. I love everyone in this clubhouse. I don’t want to go anywhere else. I want to play. If there are other teams that want to give me an opportunity, I will always do my best.”
With the crowded catcher and first base positions in Los Angeles, it’s likely that the Angels could move Napoli in the off-season. They shouldn’t close the book with Boston given the uncertainty of Victor Martinez re-signing with the team.
Update – No deal to trade Mike Napoli from Angels to Red Sox

8/29 14:14: According to a source close to Alex Speier of WEEI says the Red Sox and the Angels did not reach an agreement to trade catcher Mike Napoli despite the Sox being awarded a waiver claim.
A second source close to Speier said the Angels were “not really looking to move” Napoli right now.
8/29 17:21: The Angels will likely pull Napoli back as they can create more of a trade market for him over the winter, a league source told John Tomase of the Boston Herald. The Red Sox had interest in Napoli but also needed to put a claim in to block the Rays from obtaining him.
8/29 14:50: According to ESPN’s Joe McDonald, the Boston Red Sox have claimed Mike Napoli. McDonald adds that is is unlikely the Red Sox will complete a deal.
8/28 23:01: Major League sources close to FOXSports.com say that Los Angeles Angels catcher/first baseman Mike Napoli was claimed on trade waivers by an unknown team. The Angels and the claiming team now have until Monday afternoon to work out a deal.
Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports says the team is probably another American League club. Possible candidates include the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays, Minnesota Twins, Chicago White Sox and the Texas Rangers. All of those teams could use help at catcher, first base and/or designated hitter.
Since the return of catcher Jeff Mathis from the disabled list in June, Napoli has spent more time at first base.
Napoli is earning $3.6 million this season and is on track to be a free agent after the 2012 season. He is hitting .249 with 21 home runs and 60 RBIs in 112 games.
