Venezuelan catcher Miguel Montero, who will become a free agent at the end of the 2012 season, is looking for a contract similar to the one Victor Martinez got from the Tigers back in 2010 (four-year, $52 million) reports Jon Heyman of CBSSports.

In 2011, Montero hit .282/.351/.469 with 18 HR’s and 86 RBI’s. He had a 34 VORP, a 2.0 FRAA and a 3.8 WARP. This was Montero’s best offensive season to date in his six year career.

Martinez was coming off another strong offensive season (prior to signing his contract), where he hit .330/.380/.470 with 12 HR’s and 103 RBI’s. He had a 29.1 VORP, a -0.2 FRAA and a 3.1 WARP.

While Montero is a better defensive catcher than Martinez, Martinez has been a better hitter than Montero, but their offensive value is starting to get closer to each other. In Montero’s last three seasons his VORP has been 29.6, 11.0 and 34.0 respectively, and Martinez 20.2, 29.2 and 29.1.

Also Montero is five years younger than Martinez, so a four-year deal for him doesn’t seem crazy. According to Heyman, the Diamonbacks aren’t planning to give Montero a deal similar to the one Martinez got from the Tigers, but if you watch his performance during the past three seasons, it is hard to say that he doesn’t deserve it.

Jon Hunton who was the closer of the year in Venezuela, reached out to PRO Rumors earlier this week and explained that he is looking for new representation. Hunton, 29, had a strong 2011 season both in the summer and the winter leagues respectively.

As part of the Grand Prairie AirHogs (The American Association of Independent Professional Basebal) Hunton was named “Reliever of the Year” in 2011 (link here). Hunton went 7-2 with a 1.77 ERA, 25 saves, 47 SO, 0.4 HR/9, 3.5 BB/9 and 8.3 SO/9 in 51.0 innings.

During the winter, Hunton was named “Closer for the Year” again (link here), but this time in Venezuela as part of the Caribes de Anzoategui. He was 2-4 with 3.16 ERA, 18 saves, 0.3 HR/9, 3.5 BB/9 and 7.0 SO/9 in 31.1 games. Then he was selected as a replacement for Tiburones de la Guaira in the Final and was Francisco Rodriguez’s setup man. He also represented Venezuela in the Caribbean Series .

While Hunton was in Venezuela he left a great impression among the other teams, players and the media. He was one of the first foreign players to report and stayed until the last game of the Caribbean Series, his commitment with the Caribes organization and the rest of the league was undeniable.

I had the opportunity to watch Hunton pitch in Venezuela at least a dozen times this winter. The first thing you notice about him is his height, Hunton is 6′9” with a fluid delivery. He’s not a flame thrower, but he will keep hitters off balance with his slider, which has nice movement. Also, his 3/4 delivery makes all of his pitches move. I believe he is a great athlete in good physical condition (he used to play basketball in College), he is also a strong competitor and he definitely showed that in Venezuela.

Most of you don’t have an idea of how hard it is to pitch in winter ball. Fans are harsh with their players and they will let you know when you’re not doing your job right. You have to face strong competitors, not only young Minor Leaguers, but also Major Leaguers as well. There’s also a lot of competitiveness here but Hunton cruised throughout the season without a sweat. This league has chewed up and spit out countless top MLB prospects, but Hunton wasn’t one of them.

Hunton was drafted five times during the June Amateur Draft, the last one in 2004 by the Chicago Cubs in the eleventh round. During his eight years as a professional player Hunton is a career 34-27 with 3.18 ERA, 0.5 HR/9, 4.0 BB/9 and 8.9 SO/9 in 453.1 innings. In 2010, he was 6-6 with a 3.57 ERA, 0.7 HR/9, 3.6 BB/9 and 5.7 SO/9 in 63.0 innings for the A’s Triple-A team.

last offseason we had a Q & A with Hunton. Make sure to check that out if you haven’t.

Having the right representation can sometimes be the key to getting that tryout or invite to Spring Training that can open the door to a big league career. If you wish to contact Hunton you can write or follow him on Twitter (@Big_Jon_Hunton).

The Washington Nationals have signed Xavier Nady to a minor league deal, Amanda Comak of the Washington Times reports. Nady will report directly to minor league camp.

Bill Ladson of MLB.com notes that the deal does not include any out dates and Nady will start the season at Triple-A.

Last season, Nady battled the injury bug appearing in only 82 games for Arizona. In those games, he posted a .248 avg, .287 OBP and .359 SLG while hitting just 4 home runs and collecting 35 RBIs.

He also made a base salary of $1.75mm with incentives for being on the active roster for so many days, though he only reached the first bonus (60 days).

The Washington Nationals have checked in on outfielder Gerardo Parra of the Arizona Diamondbacks, Bill Ladson of MLB.com reports.

Parra who won a Gold Glove last season, will become the team’s fourth outfielder in Arizona with the signing of Jason Kubel to a two-year deal.

Parra, who can play all three outfield positions, would help the Nationals if Bryce Harper isn’t ready to take over right field on Opening Day or fill the void in center field.

Parra made $426k last season and is still under team control through the 2015 season.

Amnesty Clause in MLB-NL West

Posted by: Ryan | Comments View Comments

After finishing off the AL, lets jump on over to the NL West and check out the amnesty candidates in this division.

NL WEST

Diamondbacks- Since players that signed new deals this offseason are ineligible to be amnestied, you have to go down the list to find a potential candidate. Though Kevin Towers has done a good job at helping the Diamondbacks turn the corner and get back into the playoffs, I was not totally on board with some of the contracts he gave out this offseason. Ok enough rambling; my choice for the D’backs is Geoff Blum and his .224 avg. Blum will make $1.35mm this next season as a utility player. His best season came in 2002 when he hit .283 in 368 at-bats.

Padres-Jason Bartlett and Orlando Hudson are both set to make $5.5mm and had similar averages (.245 to .246) last season. The difference though is defense with the advantage going to Hudson thus making Bartlett the amnesty candidate for the Padres. Bartlett posted a .971 fielding percentage while making 18 errors at shortstop (612 chances). Hudson who played second base posted a .993 fielding percentage while only making 4 errors (550 chances).

Giants- Lets make this short and sweet, Barry Zito. Zito has two years left and $39mm on his seven-year $126mm deal that started in 2007. Since he signed his deal, Zito has yet to post an era below 4. He does have a vesting option for 2014 that vests with 200 innings pitched in 2013 or 400 innings in 2012-2013. He has yet to break the 200 inning marker and call me crazy, but I just don’t the Giants will let his option vest at $18mm if he doesn’t regain his Oakland form.

Dodgers- Since the Dodgers gave Kevin Brown $105mm back in 1998 a few things in the organization have changed a bit. They now love to hand out two and three year deals to declining veterans that are severely back-loaded thanks to the ownership situation. The Dodgers acquired Ted Lilly in 2010 and resigned him to a three-year $33mm back-loaded deal. Lilly earned $7mm last season and held his own while posting a 3.97 era. But the next two seasons, his salary will jump to $10.5mm and $12mm. If the amnesty clause was put in place like basketball it would allow a team to use it immediately, which would have allowed the Dodgers an additional $10.5mm to throw at someone like Prince Fielder to help fill another need. That’s right I forgot McCourt would’ve used the savings to pay off attorney bills, my bad.

Rockies- The Rockies presented a tough decision as I went back and forth between Todd Helton and his two-years and $9.9mm total left or injured Jorge de la Rosa and his $21mm (assuming he picks up player option for 2013). Helton re-worked his contract to free up money to allow the Rockies to fill other needs. Getting rid of the face of the franchise after all that he has done for the club and even re-working his deal for them would not go over well, which is why I didn’t select him. De la Rosa got my vote which some may disagree with. He is on a strict rehab program as he attempts to regain his form after Tommy Johny surgery last season. He isn’t expected to pitch until June and could be 2013 or ‘14 before he is able, if ever to regain his form. That type of money could be better spent elsewhere for a club that had a total payroll of around $82mm last season.
