Congratulations to New York Yankees’ captain Derek Jeter for getting his 3,000th hit by a home run.  Jeter joins not only the exclusive 3,000 hit club, but he also becomes only the second player (with Wade Boggs) to achieve the milestone hit with a home run.

Braves Minor League manager Luis Salazar was struck in the face by a line drive off the bat of Brian McCann and was airlifted to Orlando Regional Hospital, according to Mark Bowman of MLB.com.

Here’s video of the Salazar being taken off the field in an ambulance (via YouTube’s x17ERIC17x):

David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution adds that Salazar was unconscious for 20 or more minutes before regaining consciousness.  A Florida State Trooper later came to the clubhouse to tell the Braves that Salazar was breathing on his own.  Many in the dugout feared Salazar was dead.

“[The doctors] were very concerned when he got to the hospital,” Braves’ GM Frank Wren said (via MLB.com’s Mark Bowman). “Some of that has been relieved by the latest tests and how he’s responded.”

Wren said that Salazar suffered multiple face fractures and would need to undergo more tests on his left eye, but all of his vital signs are strong.

“We feel very fortunate and blessed that Louie is alive and that he is responding and able to communicate with his family and talk,” Wren said. “We just pray for the best as he continues these tests and evaluations and whatever else is ahead of him.”

McCann finished the at-bat with a strikeout after a 14-minute delay.  He then left the game.

“[McCann] was pretty torn up about it,” Chipper Jones said. “I think we all were. I think at that point, we all would have been better served to go home. You really didn’t feel like playing after experiencing something like that.”

The 54-year-old was recently named Class A Advanced Lynchburg’s manager.  Salazar had a 13-year career with the Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, San Diego Padres and Detroit Tigers.

We’ll search for video of the line drive, but given that it’s a Spring Training game, it’ll be difficult to find.

When is a harmless video of a girl feeding a guy popcorn at the Super Bowl a bad thing?  If the girl is Cameron Diaz and the guy is Alex Rodriguez, it’s likely to send shock waves  in the baseball world.

According to a source close to Bill Zwecker of the Chicago Sun-Times, Rodriguez was not too happy.

“He really went ballistic — thinking the cameraman was out to get them in a paparazzi-like shot. … That’s so crazy,” said Zwecker’s source. “Anyone who knows anything about producing a live sports event — especially something as huge as the Super Bowl — would know that those celebrity shots are purely random.

Rodriguez was given a guarantee that the shot shown around the world during the Super Bowl that he would not appear on the broadcast again.
