Rangers trade LHP Edwin Escobar to Giants for LHP Ben Snyder

The Dallas Morning News reports that the Texas Rangers have sent left-handed pitcher Edwin Escobar to the San Francisco Giants in exchange for left-handed pitcher Ben Snyder.

Snyder was originally selected by the Orioles from the Giants in the Major League Rule 5 Draft. Snyder was then sent to Texas as a player to be named later in the Kevin Millwood – Chris Ray trade in December.

Snyder did not make the Rangers’ Opening Day roster and because of the Rule 5 rules, he had to be offered back to the Giants. Rather than do that, the Rangers sent the Giants Escobar.

Snyder had a 9.00 ERA in 7 innings pitched in 6 Spring games for the Rangers.

Escobar was 2-5, with a 5.00 ERA in 13 games (12 starts) for the Arizona League Rangers in 2009.

Jorge Jimenez returned to Red Sox

Joe Frisaro of MLB.com says that potential starting third baseman for the Florida Marlins, Jorge Jimenez, was returned to the Boston Red Sox per the Rule 5 rules. Rule 5 picks — unprotected players taken from other teams at the winter meetings — must be kept on the new team’s big-league roster all season or placed on waivers, then offered back to the original club.

Frisaro said that one scenario for Jimenez was for him to win the third base job which would have paved the way for Jorge Cantu to play first base. The Marlins will probably go with Cantu at third base and Gaby Sanchez at first base.

Tom Haudricourt of the Journal Sentinel says the Milwaukee Brewers traded Minor League reliever Omar Aguilar to Clevaland for left-handed pitcher Chuck Lofgren. Lofgren was a Rule 5 pick selected from the Indians in December. According to Haudricourt, “Rule 5 picks — unprotected players taken from other teams at the winter meetings — must be kept on the new team’s big-league roster all season or placed on waivers, then offered back to the original club. Lofgren passed through waivers but rather than lose him completely, the Brewers worked out a deal with the Indians for Aguilar.”
Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle says that the Giants have returned right-handed pitcher Steven Johnson and Rule 5 pick to the Baltimore Orioles.
Houston Astros prospect Jose Vallejo cleared waivers and was sent to Triple-A Round Rock. Vallejo was acquired from the Rangers in August 2009 as one of the players to be named later in the Ivan Rodriguez trade. (Alden Gonzalez, MLB.com)

According to Mike Asmore of the Hunterdon County Democrat, he tweets that former Major League pitcher Sidney Ponson has signed with the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks.
