Rumors for Rule 5

In an announcement by the Washington Nationals, the team has returned Rule 5 selection right-handed pitcher Elvin Ramirez to the New York Mets.

The 24-year-old pitcher spent the entire season on the 60-day disabled list.  He was selected by the Nats in Rule 5 December draft in 2011 and has a career 14-23 record with a 4.08 ERA in 108 Minor League games (51 starts).

The St. Louis Cardinals have accepted right handed pitcher Brian Broderick back to their system according to Ben Goessling of MASNsports.com. The Nationals will get $25,000 back in the transaction from the original $50,000 they paid for him.

Broderick was designated for assignment a couple of weeks ago by the Nationals. Broderick had a 6.57 ERA in 12.1 innings throughout 11 games for the Nationals this season.

According to a team announcement, the Cleveland Indians received infielder Josh Rodriguez from the Pittsburgh Pirates.  Rodriguez was picked by the Pirates in the December Rule V draft, and by rule must remain on the team’s active roster for the entire season or be offered back to the original team.

The Pirates designated Rodriguez for assignment on April 22 after they acquired Brandon Wood.

In seven games for the Pirates this season, Rodriguez hit .083/.214/.083 with 1 RBI in 12 at-bats.

The Minnesota Twins have kept Rule 5 pick Scott Diamond by working out a trade with the Atlanta Braves, the team announces.  The Twins have sent right-handed pitcher Billy Bullock to the Braves in order to keep Diamond on their team.

Players chosen in the Rule 5 draft must be kept on the selecting team’s 25-man roster for the entire season or he has to be offered back to the original team.  In this case, the Twins wanted to keep Diamond in their organization, but likely did not want to keep him on the 25-man roster all season.  In lieu of sending him back to the Braves, they traded Bullock.

The 24-year-old Diamond has spent three seasons in the Braves Minor League system.  The left-hander has a career 28-20 record with a 3.28 ERA in 74 starts and 2 relief appearances.

Bullock was a second-round draft pick of the Twins from the 2009 MLB draft.  he has a 6-8 career record with a 3.18 ERA in 91 relief appearances.

According to Boston Globe’s Pete Abrahams, the Tampa Bay Rays have returned left handed pitcher Cesar Cabral (Rule-5 pick) to the Boston Red Sox.

Cabral has a career record of 13-19 with a 3.73 ERA and 263 SO in 292 innings throughout 96 games, 42 starts, in five Minor League seasons with the Red Sox organization.

The Kansas City Royals have returned Rule 5 pick left handed pitcher Robert Fish to the Los Angeles Angels reports Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.

Fish has a career record of 20-20 with a 5.05 ERA in 365.2 innings in five Minor League seasons with the Angels.

The Houston Astros have returned Rule 5 draft pick Lance Pendleton to the New York Yankees, Alyson Footer of the Houston Astros reports.  The Yankees will assign the right-handed pitcher to their Minor League camp, Footer adds.

The 27-year-old was originally a fourth-round draft pick by the Yankees in the 2005 MLB Amateur Draft.  In five Minor League seasons he has a 32-22 record in 102 appearances 88 starts with a 3.39 ERA.

Players chosen in the Rule 5 draft must be kept on the selecting team’s 25-man roster for the entire season or he has to be offered back to the original team.

The Cleveland Indians have accepted back right handed pitcher Jose Flores from the Mariners for $25,000 according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.

Flores was picked by the Mariners in the Rule-5 draft. He’ll be reporting to Minor League camp for the Indians.

Flores has a 3-11 record with a 3.92 ERA in 156 innings throughout 79 games, 13 starts in four Minor League seasons with the Indians Organization.

In a team press release, the Baltimore Orioles have announced that they have returned right-handed pitcher Adrian Rosario to the Milwaukee Brewers.  Rosario originally was a Rule 5 draft pick from December 2010.  Rosario allowed two earned runs in two innings over two Spring Training appearances.  He will be assigned to Milwaukee’s Triple-A Nashville affiliate.

The Brewers also returned right-handed pitcher Pat Egan to the Orioles.  Egan was also a Rule 5 pick from December 2010.  Egan will be assigned to the Orioles Triple-a Norfolk team.  Egan pitched in six Spring Training games for the Brewers and worked 6 1/3 scoreless innings and earned two saves.

Players chosen in the Rule 5 draft must be kept on the selecting team’s 25-man roster for the entire season or he has to be offered back to the original team.

The New York Yankees have returned Rule 5 pick Daniel Turpen to the Boston Red Sox, according to Maureen Mullen.  Turpen, a right-handed pitcher on the Pawtucket roster was originally acquired by the Sox from the San Francisco Giants at the 2010 trade deadline deal for Ramon Ramirez.

The Rule 5 draft occurs during the Winter Meetings and each draftee costs $50,000.  If a player does not stay on the selecting team’s 25-man roster all season, the player must be offered back to his original team at half-price.

The 24-year-old Turpen was originally an eighth-round draft pick by the Giants in the 2007 MLB June Amateur Draft.  In four Minor League seasons, Turpen is 16-12 with a 2.86 ERA in 156 relief appearances.
