Two years ago today, Cleveland Indians starting pitcher CC Sabathia was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for their top prospect, Matt LaPorta, along with three other decent prospects. By going after CC early, the Brewers were able to squeeze a number of extra starts out of the big lefty, as well as build team confidence heading into the playoffs.
Unfortunately for Milwaukee, we all know how this played out. CC pitched to a 11-2 record, 1.65 ERA, tossed seven complete games including three shutouts, and then got absolutely shelled in the playoffs for the second year in a row.
However, it’s an almost unarguable fact that the Brewers would in no way have made the playoffs had it not been for CC’s dominant regular season performances. What’s more interesting is that because the Brewers did not clinch a wild card berth until the last game of the season, had they waited until the trade deadline to trade for Sabathia, they still might not have made the postseason.
With Cliff Lee making headlines at the break, for the second year in a row, it seems as if the Mariners are asking for an astronomical fee for the 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner. It is rumored that they have already balked at the Minnesota Twins’ offer of Wilson Ramos and Aaron Hicks. I fully expect the M’s to trade Lee, but they are out of their minds if they think they will get two prospects of higher quality than Ramos and Hicks, if in fact the rumor is true.
But the Mariners’ strategy is very smart, at least judging from precedent. If you look at the return that Sabathia got the Indians compared to the prospects they netted for Lee in 2009, the latter is far less impressive. In their first deal, the Indians traded early, received the Brewers’ top prospect, who at the time was one of the top three hitting prospects in baseball. However, after waiting until the end of July, in my opinion, the quality of the prospects they received for Lee in 2009, were not of the caliber of LaPorta. The prize in the trade, Carlos Carrasco, was having an abysmal year in Triple-A, and catcher Lou Marson and Jason Donald were once very good prospects that were older, and not performing up to top prospect standards in Triple-A.
With the Mariners 15 games out of their division, and even further out of the wild card, their season doesn’t look bright. And while some speculate that it is too early to throw in the towel, history shows that an extra month of playing time potentially gives you a better return on your product.
The only question is, how long will Seattle wait. Most teams were tired of the Minnesota Twins toying with their emotions during the Johan Santana trade discussions, and they settled for four prospects who ultimately busted, aside from Kevin Slowey.
The Mariners need to stay smart with this Cliff Lee situation. He’s a dominant pitcher, and worth top prospects to those desperate enough to trade them. However, they must not wait too long if they plan on getting top dollar. I look for Lee to be with a new team this time next week if the Mariners know what they’re doing.

PRO Rumors iPhone app version 3.50:
We released the iPhone app version 3.50 this week. We’ve made the best even better! You’ll notice that pictures are available in the rumors view to make the app more visually appealing. Please keep the feedback coming. We’ll be releasing version 4.00 soon based on your suggestions and if you currently are an owner of this app you’ll get 4.00 as a free upgrade. We’re currently in development now and we hope to release it soon. You can buy the PRO Rumors app version 3.50 for $2.99 at: http://www.itunes.com/apps/prorumors. It is compatible with your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices.
PRO Rumors iPhone app FREE version 3.50:
For those that aren’t ready to make the plunge to the paid app, we’ve submitted the PRO Rumors FREE app version 3.50. It’s currently under review with Apple and we hope to release it any day now. It’s a stripped down version of the PRO Rumors full app. You’ll get the same great PRO Rumors, but you won’t get the historical rumors, push notifications, scores, stats, standings, leaderboards, etc. It’s a great way to get hooked onto PRO Rumors and you can decide if you want to spend the $2.99 for the full version. PRO Rumors FREE will be compatible with your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices.
New servers:
We’re doing a complete rearchitecture of the server farm behind PRO Rumors. As you know we use a combination of technologies from iPhone apps in Objective-C to our stats on Ruby on Rails. We have been getting an increasing number of readers and iPhone users every day and so we’ve made some changes in the background to accommodate the load. You may see a hiccup here and there, but we’ll keep it down to a minimum and we’ll try to do it during off-hours.
HTML5
As you know we have videos on our site. Before yesterday, those with an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch device could not view the videos on the mobile Safari web browser due to Apple’s limitations on Adobe Flash. Moving forward, we have adopted the HTML5 technology to accommodate those users in the non-Flash environment. Many of the videos this month are embedded in HTML5 so you can view them on the go. We’ll continue moving forward with HTML5 and start incorporating it throughout PRO Rumors.
As always, please send us an email. We love to hear from you. If you write, we promise to write you back!

Washington fans are currently floating on cloud nine. Their team is in the midst of an exciting 48 hours which could potentially change the face of the franchise for many years to come. Today the Nationals selected Bryce Harper with the first overall pick in the 2010 First Year Player Draft. Tomorrow, marks the Major League debut of the 2009 #1 pick Stephen Strasburg.
If your wondering what Strasburg has done to earn this much hype lets take a brief look into numbers. Strasburg dominated in his college career at San Diego State. Last year, he went 13-1 with a 1.32 ERA in 15 starts for the Aztecs en route to being presented the Golden Spikes Award for the nation’s top amateur baseball player. He struck out 195 batters with just 19 walks in 109 innings.
The domination on the mound carried over into the start of this season, his first in professional baseball, during which he went a combined 7-2 with a 1.30 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 55 1/3 innings for Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Syracuse.
Not only are the fans and the city of D.C. in a frenzy about Strasburg but also the Nationals players. “I’m looking forward to it,” said center fielder Nyjer Morgan, who gave Strasburg the nickname “Jesus” after watching him throw during Spring Training workouts. “It’s the first time I’ve ever played behind this kind of presence. He is special. Just being able to play behind somebody with that caliber is pretty cool in my eyes.”
Tomorrow when Strasburg takes the hill and makes his Major League debut against the Pirates and with a packed house, he will have the burden and responsibility of being the “Savior” to the Nationals organization.
