Rumors for Placed on waivers

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports, the Texas Rangers have placed right handed pitcher Scott Feldman on outright waivers and the waiver expires at 1pm ET.

Feldman made his final rehab start on Sunday and he was 3-1 with a 4.03 ERA in his rehab stint at Triple-A (he’s coming off microfracture knee surgery). If a team claims Feldman they will inherit his contract adds Rosenthal. He’s set to make $4.4 million this season, $6.5 million in 2012 with a $9.25 option for 2013.

Rosenthal says that Feldman could be a reasonable gamble for a team in need of starting pitching. In 2010, the right hander was 7-11 with a 5.48 ERA in 141.1 innings throughout 29 games, 22 starts.

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have been trying to trade Jake Fox since he was designated for assignment, but they have been unsuccessful.

The 10-day mark for them to make a decision on Fox is Saturday and they will probably have to pass him through outright waivers. Although teams are not allowed to comment on the waiver process, their doesn’t appear to be a trade involving him at this point adds Zrebiec.

The team could lose Fox on the waiver process, but their failure to trade him is an indication that they didn’t receive much interest in him. It’s obviously they wouldn’t have asked for much in return.

Fox was hitting .188/.250/.396 with 2 HR’s and 4 RBI’s in 48 AB’s for the Orioles this season.

The White Sox have placed right-handed pitcher Jeff Marquez on waivers reports ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.

Marquez who was originally drafted by the Yankees in the 2004 draft, came to the Sox via the Nick Swisher trade. Marquez has only seen one inning (2010) when he allowed 2 runs.

This Spring, Marquez has thrown 17 1/3 innings and allowed seven earned runs with 16 strikeouts.

Cesar Cabral may not be a household name, but he has been on a whirlwind journey the last few days as a result of a behind-the-scenes handshake agreement.  Cabral was a prospect that was left unprotected in the Rule V Draft this past December by the Red Sox.  He was selected by the Rays and as a result joined the Rays Spring Training camp where the 22 year old made three relief appearances this Spring and had a 4.91 ERA over 3 2/3 innings pitched.

On the 12th of March, the Blue Jays acquired Cabral via a waver claim.  The word was, Cabral was possibly part of a trade attempt, and if the trade didn’t happen, the Blue Jays would put him back on waivers. The trade scenario never happened and Cabral was put on waivers again and reclaimed by the Rays.

So what really happened behind the scenes that would make Toronto send Cabral back to the Rays less than 48 hours after acquiring him. Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star sheds some light on the situation and says that a handshake during Toronto’s managerial search is what made Cabral unable to unpack his bags before he was sent away.

When Blue Jay’s GM Alex Anthopoulos contacted Red Sox’s GM Theo Epstein during his managerial search, Epstein allowed him to interview and eventually hire John Farrell (also given permission to interview DeMarlo Hale and Tim Bogar). But Epstein put one condition on the Blue Jays with granting them permission to interview his coaches. The Blue Jays were not allowed to select any Red Sox players during the upcoming Rule V Draft.

So fast forward to this last week.  The Jays select Cabral who was a member of the Sox til the Rays selected him in the Rule V Draft.  After selecting him, the Jays contacted Boston and asked them for names of some of their prospects they maybe interested in, in hopes of working out a trade.  But the players Boston were interested in, the Jays felt was to high a price to pay for Cabral.

Since Toronto and Boston were not able to work out a trade, Cabral was placed back on waivers and claimed again by the Rays.

When Anthopoulos was asked about losing Cabral because of the deal he made, he said he was more than happy to make the deal as it netted them their manager of the future.  And lets face it, for every David Ortiz that is acquired in the Rule V Draft, there is 49 D.J. Houlton’s that never pan out.

Major League sources close to Jordan Schelling of MLB.com say the Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Casey Blake, Scott Podsednik and Jay Gibbons on waivers. Additionally, we heard yesterday that Hiroki Kuroda was placed on waivers.

Teams will have until Friday to place a claim on any of the players. Should a team place a claim, the Dodgers can work out a deal with the team, revoke the player from waivers or give the player away without compensation.

Many of the players were nonchalant about being placed on waivers.

“It’s fine,” Gibbons said. “I’m just happy to be here. I’d like to stay, but I was playing [in] Albuquerque two weeks ago, so if something happens, it happens.”

“I really don’t have a comment on it,” Podsednik said. “I haven’t really thought about it to be honest with you. But am I surprised? Not really, no.”

“I don’t really think about it much,” Blake said. “If somebody claims me, I just think that I’m not in control here, so I’m not going to worry about it much.”

The big name that was placed on waivers was Manny Ramirez. It is widely believed that the Chicago White Sox and the Dodgers are preparing to making a trade for the outfielder unless another team with a higher waiver priority blocks the Sox from doing so.

According to sources close to ESPN.com, the Los Angeles Dodgers have placed outfielder Manny Ramirez on waivers.  Teams will have until Friday afternoon to put a claim on Ramirez.

Yesterday, Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said Ramirez will not clear waivers because the Chicago White Sox will claim him with the intention of acquiring him.

Per Major League waiver rules, National League teams will get the first shot at claiming Ramirez. However, Rosenthal says none are expected to do so. The Tampa Bay Rays and Texas Rangers are interested in Ramirez, but the White Sox would have priority over them.

Ramirez is owned approximately $4.25 million for the rest of the season, with most of it deferred. He would need to waive his no-trade clause to go to the White Sox, but it would be in his best interest to do so, since he would have the opportunity to showcase his hitting skills as a designated hitter in the American League without having to deal with the liability of playing the outfield.

Maybe Dodgers GM Ned Colletti has finally realized that 2010 wasn’t the Dodgers year. Even after the trade deadline, Colletti continued to look for ways to upgrade the team. Which for the fans of a big market team is what you expect from the GM. But there comes a time when you have to say this year wasn’t our year and move on. Part of that moving on process is putting certain players on waivers to gauge other teams interest and try and get a return for that player if your able to make a trade. According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Dodgers did just that today and put Hiroki Kuroda on waivers. One executive told Rosenthal that the Yankees if given the opportunity would claim Kuroda. It is unknown if the Dodgers plan to keep Kuroda on waivers or if they will pull him back. Kuroda is set to start tomorrow night in Milwaukee against the Brewers which could be his last start as a Dodger if he is claimed and traded. Kuroda currently sports a 3.48 ERA but has a very deceiving 8-11 record which can be partly attributed to the Dodgers poor offensive effort as of late. Kuroda is also scheduled to make $2.7mm for the rest of the year.

The Yankees would love to pick up a talented pitcher like Kuroda as they recently decided to move Javier Vazquez to the bullpen due to his decrease in velocity and overall poor pitching. As well as the uncertainty of Andy Pettitte and his return from the DL. Every contender would love to have a player like Kuroda. The question is will the Dodgers pull Kuroda back or let him go through waivers and see who he lands with.

The New York Mets are preparing to activate catcher Rod Barajas from the disabled list today, so now the team will face a decision over how long to retain three catchers.  According to a Major League source close to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Mets had placed Barajas on waivers. Another team could now claim him or facilitate a trade for the veteran catcher. Martino adds that Barajas is not likely to return to the Mets next season.

Barajas, 34, is hitting .228/.266/.419 with 12 home runs in 73 games for the Mets this year. He signed a one-year, $500,000 contract with the Mets this past Winter.

8/19 00:50: Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post says Hawpe will officially be released on Thursdays. Texas will be an option for Hawpe. His former manager, Clint Hurdle, is the team’s hitting coach. Hawpe hit a single in a pinch hitting appearance for the Rockies on Wednesday night.

8/18 18:46: Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post tweets, “Here’s the latest. Matt Reynolds expect to join team tomorrow. Hawpe will become free agent w Texas among interested teams”

8/18 17:18: Troy E. Renck of The Denver Post tweets, “A move w hawpe expected after game or before tomorrows game Likely get outright release. Texas is a team w interest acc to source”

8/18 13:22: Jayson Stark of ESPN says the “Rockies have made it clear they would like to trade Hawpe to open up more playing time for the recently recalled Eric Young Jr. But the Denver Post reported Wednesday that the Rockies are also considering designating Hawpe for assignment or releasing him if they can’t work out a deal.”

“They’d like to move forward,” said an official of one team that’s been speaking with the Rockies. “They haven’t written off the year, and they don’t want to appear like they’re writing it off. But at this point, they think they’re better with Seth Smith in the lineup every day and Eric Young in that super-utility role.”

8/18 13:19: A source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says that Hawpe has cleared waivers and now can be traded to any club.

8/17 09:39: According to a Major League source close to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, the Colorado Rockies have placed outfielder/first baseman Brad Hawpe on trade waivers on Monday. Hawpe has been performing poorly since the All Star Break and by moving him, the team will have an opportunity to play outfielder Seth Smith.

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post says, “If no team claims him, the Rockies’ options would be to keep him on the roster, release him or place him on the disabled list with a pre-existing rib injury.”

Hawpe is owed nearly $2.2 million for the rest of the season. He has a $10 million club option for 2011 with a $500,000 buyout.

7/19 22:05:Dodgers reliever George Sherrill has cleared outright waivers without being claimed by another team. Before the end of the current waiver period, which ends July 31, the Dodgers can attempt to send Sherrill on a Minor League assignment, removing him from the 40-man roster, or release him. If the Dodgers do choose to send Sherrill on a Minor League assignment, he as a player with more than five years of service has the choice to consent to it, reject it or declare free agency. Declaring free agency would nullify the remainder of his $4.5 million salary. If Sherrill rejected the assignment, the club must either release him to become a free agent (and pay him) or keep him on the active roster.

“George Sherrill doesn’t have a situation. He’s still in our bullpen,” Dodgers manager Joe Torre said. “I think he’s throwing the ball better.”  The Dodgers may also be holding onto Sherrill as Ronald Belisario is currently in a substance abuse program with no return date in sight.  The Dodgers are hoping that Sherrill can revert back to his 2009 self where he made 30 appearances and had a 0.65 ERA.

7/14 15:01: According to Ed Price of AOL FanHouse, the Los Angeles Dodgers have put reliever George Sherrill on outright waivers. He has a $4.5 million salary, so he should clear waivers and then he can be sent to the Minors.

Sherrill, 33, is 0-1 with a 7.32 ERA in 34 appearances with the Dodgers this season.
