Taylor Buchholz to sit out 2012
Posted by: | Comments
Relief pitcher Taylor Buchholz plans to skip the 2012 baseball season, his agent, David Pasti tells ESPNNewYork.com (as reported by Adam Rubin).
The New York Mets granted him free agency after the 2011 season. Buchholz and the Mets announced last summer that the pitcher was dealing with emotional issues.
“If he signs with anyone, it would be with the Mets,” Pasti said. “The way they handled the situation with Taylor meant a lot to him. The Mets really cared about him. As of right now, Taylor is taking the year off. He’s feeling great, but not ready to get back into baseball. He’s taking it one day at a time.”

Tigers Victor Martinez likely out for season
Posted by: | Comments
The Detroit Tigers were dealt a serious blow today when they learned Victor Martinez had a torn ACL which will likely require season ending surgery. Luckily for Tiger fans, general manager Dave Dombrowski isn’t rushing his next step on who he will potentially target to help fill the offensive void that was created with the injury to Martinez.“After you feel sorry for yourself for a day you move on, you look at all your alternatives” Dombrowski said on a conference call with reporters today.
The Tigers have plenty of options open to them to help them fill the .330 avg, 178 hit, 103 RBI’s and a .380 OBP void that the was created with Martinez sidelined. Martinez was also the primary protection in the lineup behind slugger Miguel Cabrera.
Dombrowski could go with a free agent like Manny Ramirez (though he would miss the first 50 games), Johnny Damon or Vladimir Guerrero. Or he could go the trade route and acquire another bat or promote from within the organization.
But another option which is intriguing is to try and sign Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and move Delmon Young who they signed to a one-year $6.75mm deal today (avoiding arbitration) into the full time DH role.
Martinez was entering the second year of his four-year $50mm deal he signed last offseason.

Right handed pitcher John Lackey will undergo Tommy John surgery according to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com. Lackey visited Dr. Lewis Yocum in California to have his right elbow checked.
Rob Bradford of WEEI.com, points out that Lackey had a vesting option at the Major League minimum ($414,000) for a sixth season if he required season-ending surgery on a pre-existing elbow condition. And this surgery will automatically make the option vest.
This season, Lackey was 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA in 160 innings throughout 28 starts for the Red Sox.

Will the Indians exercise Sizemore’s option?
Posted by: | Comments
The Cleveland Indians have a $9 million club option on Grady Sizemore for 2012, but the big question is – will they exercise it?
Sizemore has played 104 games in the last two years, and has recently had his fifth surgery in the last three years, so Indian fans have to wonder if the team will take the risk?
“Not going to speculate on that,” said GM Chris Antonetti in a text to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer. “We’ll let you know when we have a decision on the option.”
“We are hopeful that the surgery will alleviate Grady’s symptoms in his knee and expedite his recovery,” Antonetti added.
Sizemore is expected to be ready by Spring Training, but with who?
