Dodgers hire former LA Police Chief to assess security
Posted by: | Comments
It may be a case of too little too late, especially for 42-year-old Bryan Stow, but the Los Angeles Dodgers have hired former police chief William Bratton to assess the team’s security policies, the Associated Press reports.
Bratton and his security consulting firm, Kroll, will begin work immediately to develop a security blueprint that extends to both Dodger Stadium and its parking lot.
“I am pleased to have the opportunity to return to Los Angeles to consult with the Dodger organization on the security posture at Dodger Stadium,” said Bratton. “We will take a full and comprehensive look at security procedures and processes, and make recommendations based on our findings.”
Stow was brutally beaten last week after a game between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers and he is currently in critical condition and in a coma. There is a $100,000 reward for information leading to the capture of two shaven-headed young men that are suspected of beating Stow. Sketches of the two victims can be seen here.
Beaten Giants fan in coma – has a long road to recovery

The San Francisco Giants fan that was brutally beaten last week after a game with the Los Angeles Dodgers is in critical condition. Doctors have said that “There is evidence of brain injury and dysfunction.” ESPN reports that doctors at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center said that 42 year-old father of two, Bryan Stow, suffered a severe skull fracture and bad bruising to his brain’s frontal lobes and his long recovery process may include issues with memory, thinking ability and personality.
Between the Giants, Dodgers, Los Angeles County, American Medical Response and a handful of other entities, a reward of $100,000 has been offered for information leading to the capture of the two shaven-headed young men that are suspected of beating Stow after last week’s game. Stow was headed to a taxi stand when the two young men began to taunt him and swear at him and other Giants fans. Stow was punched in the back of the head, fell to the pavement and was kicked before the attackers ran off.
Sketches of the two victims can be seen here.
The Giants plan to honor Stow by dedicating Monday’s game against the Dodgers in San Francisco to him. The team will collect donations from fans to support Stow and his family. Stow will also get a tribute from the team in a special ceremony before the game.
Dodger fan refuses lunch date with Frank McCourt
Posted by: | Comments
Long-time Los Angeles Dodgers fan and season ticket holder Brian Gadinsky, or Brian from Westwood as known by his peers on Dodger Talk radio, declined an invitation to have lunch with owner Frank McCourt, Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times reports. On top of that, he also said he will not go back to Dodger Stadium until there’s a change in ownership.
It’s never been about winning or losing,” said Gadinsky. “The Dodgers have been part of my life, and I will love them no matter what.”
The lunch came about when Gadinsky declined to renew his season tickets, but he turned it down because of McCourt.
“My friends all asked me if I was crazy,” Gadinsky said. “I told them, no, I am just tired. … I am tired of being loyal to a man who has not returned that loyalty.”
“This is not a crusade, I am not calling for a boycott, I love my team and, as always, I hope and pray and believe they will go 162-0,” said Gadinsky. “But I can no longer support a man who has taken this great foundation and allowed it to rot.”
Maybe Gadinsky should give Andre Ethier a call since it sounds like he too may not return to Dodger Stadium after the 2011 season.
Joe Maddon has fan removed for racist comments
Posted by: | Comments
Here’s a case from manager/fan incident that occurred over the weekend. According to Marc Topkin of the St. Petersburg Times, Tampa Bay Rays manager, Joe Maddon, had security remove a fan removed for yelling racist comments at B.J. Upton. The fan was wearing an Orioles jersey.
He said something racial and I didn’t like it,’’ Maddon said. “He can say whatever he wants, but don’t go there. And I didn’t want B.J. to go up into the stands or do anything at that point. So I just wanted to make sure he was taken out of there. There is no room for that at all.’
A Twitter account appeared on Sunday evening from a fan claiming to be the one who was kicked out of the game. They said, “by no means did I use any racist terms against Upton or anyone else. I simply yelled he sucks because I don’t like him. Maddon is a liar.” The Tweet has since been removed.
GQ Magazine names Phillies fans worst in America
Posted by: | Comments
Spoiler alert for GQ Magazine subscribers. In GQ’s April 2011 magazine (due out on March 22, 2011), writer Adam Winer has named the Philadelphia Phillies fans the worst sports fans in America. (To be fair he named both the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles fans and MLB’s Phillies fans as #1 & #2).
Why did Winer name them the worst?
Just last season alone Citizens Bank Park was the host of a fan being tased (see video here) on the outfield grass and a drunken fan intentionally vomiting on an 11-year-old girl.
“Some of these people would boo the crack in the Liberty Bell,” Pete Rose once said.
Others on the list of worst fans in America include:
#6 – Boston Red Sox
#9 – New York Yankees
Steve Bartman film to lead ESPN Sports Film Festival
Posted by: | Comments
A film about Steve Bartman and his infamous play during the 2003 NLCS is the subject of Catching Hell – a film that leads the list at the 5th Annual Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival to be held in New York on April 20.
The film was originally to be part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 film series, but it wasn’t ready in time. Michael McCarthy of USA Today says the movie will explore “the psychology of die-hard sports fans, the frightening phenomenon of scapegoating and the hysteria that turned mild-mannered Bartman into the most hated man in Chicago.”
The film is written an directed by Alex Gibney and is centered around the pop fly that Bartman deflected away from Cubs left fielder Moises Alou that arguably cost the Cubs a trip to the World Series.

At the time of this video, Orlando Cabrera was not an active player (DL for an oblique straing), so technically he’s a common person like. In August he donned a “BB” jersey and was the team’s bat boy for the day.

Fan who rushed field was targeting Alex Rodriguez
Posted by: | Comments
A 33-year-old fan obsessed with actress Cameron Diaz ran onto the field during the Game 3 of the ALCS with the intention to rush New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez. Grim LeRogue was tackled by Yankee Stadium security in the top of the fifth inning of Monday’s game. In LeRogue’s pocket, police found a picture of Rodriguez with his face crossed out and a drawing of a small gun pointed at his head, according to a source close to the New York Daily News’ Bob Kappstatter and Joe Kemp.
“He was absolutely out of his f—–g mind,” said the source.
Rodriguez and Diaz have been seen together since the Super Bowl earlier this year. The couple has been spotted throughout Manhattan and have even been shuttling back and forth to Miami as time permits.
