Agent to Cardinals: ‘No chance to sign’ Albert Pujols before free agency

The chances of the Cardinals extending Albert Pujols‘ contract do not look too good right now.. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Pujol’s agent, Dan Lozano, has told multiple teams that the Cardinals have “no chance to sign him” before free agency.
Pujols has made it known that the negotiation deadline is Tuesday, and if they cannot come to an agreement Pujols will not continue negotiations until after the 2011 season.
Keep in mind that the Cardinals cannot trade their franchise player without his permission, because of his 10-and-5 rights, so should the first baseman leave, the Cardinals may only receive two draft picks as compensation.
Zack Greinke Changes Agents: Could a trade be next?

A source close to Ed Price and AOL FanHouse said that right-handed pitcher Zack Greinke has switched agents. He is now being represented by Jeff Berry and Casey Close of CAA. Greinke had been a client of SFX.
Price speculates that the timing of the switch could signal Greinke’s move out of Kansas City this off season. Recently, Greinke was described as “fed up” with the Kansas City Royals’ losing ways.
Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports adds that Greinke as asked the Royals to trade him. One source close to FOXSports says “He really wants out of K.C.”
In case you are wondering, Greinke has a list of fifteen teams he cannot be move to via a trade. The list includes the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and the Washington Nationals.
Greinke is signed through the 2012 season, and he leaves little doubt that he’ll sign a new deal if the Royals are not competitive. The 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner will make $13.5 million each season for 2011 and 2012.
Boras loans money to families of poor Dominican prospects

According to people close to agent Scott Boras, the agent provided tens of thousands of dollars in loans and payments to the families of poor Dominican prospects. This obviously raises questions about business ethics and the violation of rules set by the Major League Baseball Players Association, according to the New York Times’ Michael S. Schmidt.
“The money obligates them to the agent, gives the agent leverage, and coerces the athlete to do what the agent wants because of fear of foreclosure or other adverse consequences for the athlete or the athlete’s family,” said Mark S. Levinstein, a prominent sports lawyer.
Loans that are greater than $500 a year to a player and their families is prohibited under union rules unless the purpose is disclosed.
Boras has said that his company has “aided” players and their families in the past.
In a written statement, a spokesman for Major League Baseball said, “This is a serious issue that raises concerns about the business practices of agents who have played a prominent role in the game.”
An employee of Boras and former Major League Baseball player, Domingo Ramos, says the money was used for housing, food and other necessities.
One player, Edward Salcedo, received payments from Boras early in his professional career. Salcedo eventually signed with another agent, but during his relationship with Boras, the Salcedo family received monthly payments for more than $1000 a month from Boras’s company. Salcedo eventually signed for $1.6 million with the Atlanta Braves in February 2010.
