The chances of the Cardinals extending Albert Pujols‘ contract do not look too good right now..  Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Pujol’s agent, Dan Lozano, has told multiple teams that the Cardinals have “no chance to sign him” before free agency.

Pujols has made it known that the negotiation deadline is Tuesday, and if they cannot come to an agreement Pujols will not continue negotiations until after the 2011 season.

Keep in mind that the Cardinals cannot trade their franchise player without his permission, because of his 10-and-5 rights, so should the first baseman leave, the Cardinals may only receive two draft picks as compensation.

Earlier today, sources close to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, said that Yankees’ right fielder Nick Swisher was hiring Scott Boras as his new agent.

Now Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports says that Swisher is indeed switching agent, but he hired Dan Lozano instead of Boras.

“We’re excited for the opportunity to represent Nick and be part of his team.” Said Lozano (via Rosenthal).

Recently, Robinson Cano also hired Boras as his agent. Swisher is set to make $9 million in 2011 and has an option for $10.25 million in 2012 or a $1 million buyout.

According to Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes, Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano has hired Scott Boras as his new agent. Prior to Boras, Cano was represented by Bobby Barrett and previously Joe Rosario and Peter Vescovo.

Cano and Boras got together last Friday in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, and worked out in the city’s stadium. Boras pitched batting practice to Cano before sitting down to work on the final details of their arrangement.

The 28-year-old infielder signed a four-year, $30 million contract that goes through the 2011 season.  There are team options for 2012 and 2013, but it would not be surprising if Cano expects to use Boras to land a cushy contract extension.

A source close to Ed Price and AOL FanHouse said that right-handed pitcher Zack Greinke has switched agents. He is now being represented by Jeff Berry and Casey Close of CAA. Greinke had been a client of SFX.

Price speculates that the timing of the switch could signal Greinke’s move out of Kansas City this off season. Recently, Greinke was described as “fed up” with the Kansas City Royals’ losing ways.

Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports adds that Greinke as asked the Royals to trade him. One source close to FOXSports says “He really wants out of K.C.”

In case you are wondering, Greinke has a list of fifteen teams he cannot be move to via a trade. The list includes the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and the Washington Nationals.

Greinke is signed through the 2012 season, and he leaves little doubt that he’ll sign a new deal if the Royals are not competitive. The 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner will make $13.5 million each season for 2011 and 2012.

According to people close to agent Scott Boras, the agent provided tens of thousands of dollars in loans and payments to the families of poor Dominican prospects. This obviously raises questions about business ethics and the violation of rules set by the Major League Baseball Players Association, according to the New York Times’ Michael S. Schmidt.

“The money obligates them to the agent, gives the agent leverage, and coerces the athlete to do what the agent wants because of fear of foreclosure or other adverse consequences for the athlete or the athlete’s family,” said Mark S. Levinstein, a prominent sports lawyer.

Loans that are greater than $500 a year to a player and their families is prohibited under union rules unless the purpose is disclosed.

Boras has said that his company has “aided” players and their families in the past.

In a written statement, a spokesman for Major League Baseball said, “This is a serious issue that raises concerns about the business practices of agents who have played a prominent role in the game.”

An employee of Boras and former Major League Baseball player, Domingo Ramos, says the money was used for housing, food and other necessities.

One player, Edward Salcedo, received payments from Boras early in his professional career. Salcedo eventually signed with another agent, but during his relationship with Boras, the Salcedo family received monthly payments for more than $1000 a month from Boras’s company. Salcedo eventually signed for $1.6 million with the Atlanta Braves in February 2010.

Hisashi Iwakuma’s agent, Don Nomura, is clarifying the negotiation situation between his client and the Oakland Athletics via Twitter.

Yesterday, sources close to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle said that the A’s and Iwakuma had broken off talks and Iwakuma had been looking for a Barry Zito-type deal of $18 million per year.

In a series of tweets, Nomura says the A’s offer was for four-years for $15.25 million (an average of $3.81 million per season). With the $19.1 million posting fee, the cost for Iwakuma would be around $8.5 million.  This eventually spiraled out of control and likely led the public to believe that Hisashi was looking for Zito-type money.

The posting fee would go straight to Rakuten, so that number had no impact for Iwakuma.  It eventually came down to a “take it or leave it” situations with the A’s threatening to send out a press release that the negotiations had ended.

Nomura says the door isn’t shutting the door and he’ll be happy to continue to negotiate until December 8th – the last day the A’s and Iwakuma can work out a deal per the posting system. He told the Slusser in an email, “I don’t know if the talks are dead,” Nomura wrote. “I am assuming it’s over, however I am open for discussion until 11: 59 p.m. Dec 7.”
