K-Rod confirms Boras – will not be setup man
Posted by: | Comments
According to Adam Berry and Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, New York Mets closer, Francisco Rodriguez is now a Scott Boras client. Rodriguez confirmed this information (via Brian Costa of the Wall Street Journal), and said that will not accept deal to team on his no-trade list if it means being a setup man.
Rodriguez is wrapping up his three year, $37 million contract that was signed prior to the 2009 season, and should he finish 55 games this season he would vest his $17.5 million contract option for 2012.
K-Rod is a candidate to be traded by the Mets given his contract vesting situation. Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports said that the Mets have contacted the New York Yankees about Rodriguez’s availability, but the Yankees would only be interested in K-Rod at a minimal price.

Will Adrian Gonzalez sign a contract extension?
Posted by: | Comments
We are several days into the new season and there hasn’t been any word about Adrian Gonzalez signing an contract extension with the Boston Red Sox. Many speculated that a deal (rumored to be in the range of seven-years for $154 million) would be signed after the season started to defer luxury taxes. It’s been over a week since we last heard from the parties involved.
Everything went really well,’’ Gonzalez’s agent John Boggs said about a recent meeting with the Red Sox. “What we’re on schedule to do is hopefully get something resolved at some point in April and move from there. Our meeting really consisted in catching up with them on particulars we left off in December and try to advance those. I’m sure we made pretty good strides there.”
The Red Sox have their first baseman under contract for 2011 at an affordable $5.5 million, but they wouldn’t have made a trade for him unless they knew they could keep him for the long-run.
At seven-years for $154 million it would come down to an average annual value of $22 million. This is below the $25 million annual salary that Ryan Howard will be paid from 2012-2016.
Free agent-to-be Albert Pujols will also be keeping a close eye on Gonzalez’s deal since it will likely be used as leverage in his contract negotiations this Winter.

According to Melissa Segura of Sports Illustrated, a former agent with Hendricks Sports Management, Rodney Fernandez, was charged with grand theft for taking money from Los Angeles Angels’ first baseman Kendry Morales.
The criminal complaint versus Rodney Fernandez says that he stole, $305,574.29 from Morales to “enhance [Fernandez's] recruiting business.” Additionally, the complaint adds that Fernandez was hired by Hendricks Sports Management to recruit players for the agency.
Fernandez is being held at the Broward County Main Jail on a $10,000 bond.
Choo has not heard from Indians regarding long-term deal
Posted by: | Comments
Cleveland Indians outfielder, Shin-Soo Choo is open to a long-term deal, but he has not heard from GM Chris Antonetti about a possibility of it happening, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.
“He hasn’t said anything about my contract. Nothing,” Choo said. “I don’t know if my agent and the Indians talk about it. I don’t know. My agent never told me. He said the contract is over for this year. So I said, ‘OK.’ My focus is on this year.”
The agent Choo is referring to is the infamous Scott Boras, and if history dictates itself, fans of Choo should not expect the outfielder to give up arbitration or free agent years for the security of a long-term deal.
Choo will be a free agent in 2013 and if he continues his success, he’ll command big bucks once he is free to sign anywhere. He avoided arbitration with the Indians this season by signing a one-year, $3.975 deal.
Choo and Cleveland have been discussing a contract extension for some time, but there have been no indication as to which way the talks have been leaning towards. The outfielder is not open to discussions once the season starts.
