Red Sox sign Vicente Padilla

By Ryan

The Boston Red Sox have signed Vicente Padilla to a minor-league deal, Peter Gammons of MLB Network reports. Padilla will make $1.5mm while in the Majors.

It is unclear if Boston views Padilla as a starter or a bullpen piece but will likely start off in the competition for the fifth starter role. Last year for the Dodgers, Padilla worked out of the bullpen and was slated to be the everyday closer but suffered a season ending injury after only 8 2/3 innings.

In four seasons with Texas in the AL, Padilla went 43-34 with a 4.90 era.
