Marte was sidelined the entire 2011 season due to an injury. The left handed pitcher was 2-6 with a 6.02 ERA in 49.1 innings throughout 76 games with the Yankees in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Even though the World Series starts today, I decided to write about amateur baseball, specifically about a tournament organized by the MSBL (Men Senior Baseball League) called the Fall Classic.

I decided to talk about this specific tournament, well because I played in it last year and I’m 22 days away from going to Florida to play in it again.

Now, this specific tournament is played only once a year in Florida. Last year the tournament was held in the Cardinals’ Spring Training Complex, the Mets’ Spring Training Complex, the Marlins’ Spring Training Complex and the old DODGERTOWN.

The tournament is organized in age groups. +18, +25, +35, +45, +52 and some groups have the option to play with wood or aluminum bats. Besides that, the +25 group age has two divisions, one accepts ex-pros and the other one doesn’t.

The fun part of this tournament, besides the obvious part of playing baseball, is the fact that you get to play against teams from different countries. In 2010 we played against our arch-rivals in Venezuela, three teams from the U.S.A and one from the Dominican Republic.

Last year, was not only my first time there, but the first time my team, as a team, played in the tournament. Some of our players played before with other teams. Unfortunately we didn’t do as we expected. We won the first game against our arch-rivals, but the next day we took two huge blows.

First we lost in 12 innings against the Dominican Republic team 3-2, one of the greatest games I’ve had the pleasure of playing in. Then we suffered an 8-5 defeat against a team from Cleveland (I lost that one pitching 5 innings and allowing 4 runs, 3 earned). The next day we had to play against the undefeated team of our group and lost 6-4 eliminating us from contention.

For this edition, we decided to recruit some new weapons to add to our pitching staff. First Victor Prieto, who played with the Marlins and Red Sox from 2002 to 2005 between Rookie and Single-A. His best season was in 2002 when he was 4-2 with a 3.16 ERA in 31.1 innings for the Gulf Coast Marlins.

We also recruited Luis Torres who played with the Nationals from 1999 to 2003 and had a career record of 28-32 with a 4.35 ERA in 457.1 innings throughout 110 games, 68 starts between Rookie, Single-A and Double-A levels. Juan Carlos Ugas who recorded a 5.30 ERA in 100.2 innings for the Dodgers Single-A team between 1999 and 2000.

And last, but not least, Juan Carlos Ovalles who played for the Diamondbacks, Mariners, White Sox and Nationals from 1999 to 2006. He played in an  independent league from 2006 to 2009 there too. His career record, including his years in independent league was 44-44 with a 4.27 ERA in 609.1 innings throughout 340 games, 35 starts between Rookie, Single-A and Double-A levels.

Hopefully these new acquisitions, with the rest of our pitching staff will help us contend in the tournament this year, and hopefully win it all.

Here’s a video of the last out in the 2008 Fall Classic’s Final. The UNDEFEATED champions that year were our Venezuelans arch-rivals “San Luis Venezuela.”

For more information about the tournament go to the MSBL website, and don’t forget to root for my (Juan Dominguez, @JuanchoXIII) team, “Cachicamos de Venezuela.” BTW. “Cachicamos” mean Armadillos.

The picture is our last year’s team. In case you are wondering I’m the fifth from right to left in the standing row.

Yankees GM, Brian Cashman, believes he’ll have a new contract with the Yankees by the end of this month according to Bryan Hoch of MLB.com.

“It’ll get done between now and Oct. 31st, I’m sure,” Cashman said. “I can’t promise, but I think that’s what everybody expects. I know it’s something that everybody has to follow. But that’s not a pressing circumstance, as far as something I’m worried about right now.”

“I’m sure it could get done over the phone, from my perspective,” he said. “I don’t want to speak for him.”

Hoch adds that Cashman is completing a three-year, $6 million agreement with the club. Last week, we learned that the negotiations between the parties were “going smoothly.” Cashman also said that his expiring contract “has not affected how he attacks his offseason duties,” says Hoch.

According to Garin Groff of the East Valley Tribune, the city of Mesa now has a 30-year deal in place for building a new $99 million Spring Training Complex for the Chicago Cubs. The City Council approved a package of Cubs deals Monday on a 6-0 vote adds Groff.

The Cubs would have to pay though for any expenses exceeding $84 million for the stadium and $15 million for related projects.

The project will begin by spring or summer of 2012 and the new Complex would be open for Spring Training 2014 according to Groff. The Cubs must have at least 10,000 square feet of restaurant or retail space by opening day to secure development rights on up to 6 acres of land adds Groff.

Left handed pitcher Darren Oliver said that he would like to come back for another Major League season in 2012 according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.com. The 41-year old reliever though will consult with his wife and sons before making any decisions adds Morosi.

“I don’t know yet,” Oliver says. “I talked to my kids the other day. It was kind of funny. (Brock) thinks if I told (Maxwell) that I was only going to play one more year, he might be OK with it, because he could see the light at the end of the tunnel.

“The younger one doesn’t want me to keep hanging on, hanging on, hanging on.”

Morosi also adds that with the season Oliver had this year with the Rangers they might be interested in bringing him back. Oliver was 5-5 with a 2.29 ERA in 51 innings throughout 61 games in 2011.

Designated hitter Jim Thome is expected to retire later this year and according to Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times, the left handed hitter could join the White Sox’s coaching staff for 2012.

The team named former third baseman Robin Ventura as their new manager and they’re expected to name Mark Parent as their new bench coach and Schouwen says that they could go for a bigger name like Thome too.

The veteran designated hitter has a good relationship with White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf. They actually hold an annual meeting over dinner to talk about life and baseball after a season, and according to a Major League source close to Schouwen Reinsdorf “was eager to move this year’s meeting up.”

Thome hit .256/.361/.477 with 15 HR’s and 50 RBI’s in 277 AB’s for the Twins and Indians in 2011. But the biggest achievement for him this season was reaching the 600 career homer plateau.

Here’s a running list of injury updates around the Major Leagues:

– Phillies GM, Ruben Amaro Jr, says he’s not sure if Chase Utley’s knee problems are “behind him” according to Bob Brookover of the Philadelphia Enquirer. “I don’t know if it’s behind him,” Amaro said. “Is he going to be a 30-home run, 110-RBI guy and hit .300? I don’t know that. I hope he is. That will help us. Whatever we get out of Chase is going to help us. I know he is going to strive to get to the point where he can maximize his numbers and his production.”

– Rangers left fielder Josh Hamilton said he’s been playing at 50 percent with a strained groin in the playoffs according to Richard Durrett of ESPN Dallas/Forth Worth. “I’m about 50 percent,” Hamilton said. “I’m going to give you 100 percent of my 50 percent.”

“We got a lot of power on the team, so I’m definitely not concerning myself with hitting home runs and producing that way,” Hamilton said. “Whatever the game asked me to do — whether get a guy over, or make a catch in the outfield — I’m trying to do it. I told Kins after our first at-bat [Saturday], ‘Let’s not try to do too much.’ ”

– Blue Jays prospect Travis d’Arnaud tore ligaments in one of his thumbs while catching for the USA team in the Panama’s Baseball World Cup and according to Bob Elliot of the Toronto Sun he went home to undergo surgery.

Here are a few San Diego Padres related news from Bill Center of the Union Tribune:

– According to Center, Mat Latos could be used as trade bait in order to bring a bat to San Diego. Given the fact that he is under team control for the next four years, they could get a lot in return from a team that is willing to overpay. Center believes that the Yankees could be an option, and adds that he would ask for at least a major league-ready every day player, a prospect and a pitching prospect in return.

– Padres closer Heath Bell wants a three-year deal according to Center, but the Padres are offering two years at a $7.5 $8 million range with an option for 2014 right now. The question here is if he would go for a two-year deal with a limited no-trade clause.

– It has been rumored that the Red Sox are looking to deal right hander John Lackey, and the Padres could be a good fit for him since Lackey worked with Bud Black in Anaheim. Center points out though that the Red Sox would have to eat most of Lackey’s contract in order to get a deal done. He says that the Padres won’t pay more than $60 million over the next four years for Lackey.
