Rumors for October, 2011

According to Nick Klopsis of Newsday, contract talks between the Mets and Jose Reyes haven’t started yet. Reyes said yesterday that the Mets haven’t reached out to him so far.

“They’ll probably start up within the next few days,” said Reyes. “But right now, everything’s quiet.” The short stop has made it clear that he would like to stay in New York, but he knows that it might not be possible.

“I’ve always said that I wanted to stay here,” he added. “But at the same time, I understand that this is a business, and we just need to wait and see what happens.”

Back in August, we gave a list of possible suitors for Reyes. The 28-year old short stop hit .337/.384/.493 with 7 HR’s and 44 RBI’s in 537 AB’s for the Mets in 2011.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have set signing Matt Kemp to an extension as one of their top priorities, but GM Ned Colleti said that they won’t put a deadline to get it done Ramona Shelburne of ESPNLosAngeles.com reports.

Kemp’s agent, Dave Stewart, previously said that Opening Day would be the deadline to negotiate a new contract.

“Whenever you have a negotiation, one side’s always got the right to say they’re not doing anything,” said Colletti. “Or two sides have the right to say that, or two sides have the ability to say, ‘Yeah, let’s do something.’ So however that goes, we’ll do what we can do from our side of it. We can’t control the other side no matter who it is.”

Shelburne adds that although Colletti prefers to have all his negotiations done during the winter it isn’t imperative. “I’ve done a handful of deals during a season, but the total number is very small compared to those that have been done in the offseason,” he added. “You take every situation case by case, you never say no to anything.”

Back in September, we learned that the Dodgers uldwo have money to spend this winter.

Stewart said that his “preference” to get Kemp signed before Opening Day is a matter of principle, not strategy according to Shelburne.

“Matt is the guy that I work for, it would be my advice to him to just play and let’s not do any negotiations during the course of the year,” Stewart said. “I’ve been a player and I’ve been in that position before and it’s a distraction. For me, especially in next year’s season, the most important thing is just have Matt concentrate on having another great year. To go out and play. This stuff would be a distraction for him and for the ballclub.”

Kemp hit .324/.399/.586 with 39 HR’s and 129 RBI’s in 602 AB’s for the Dodgers in 2011. He also became the newest member of the 30/30 clubs with his 39 HR’s and 40 stolen bases.

The Cincinnati Reds will send left handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman to Puerto Rico to begin his transition as a starter according to John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Chapman will first play in the Instructional League in Goodyear, and then he’ll travel to Puerto Rico.

“We’re finalizing plans right now,” Reds GM Walt Jocketty said. “He’ll gradually build up his innings. He’ll pitch two or three innings to start. Eventually, we’ll get him up to five innings.”

The left hander will spend one month in Winter League, and Jocketty believes that will give him enough time to rest before Spring Training.

Chapman was 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA in 50.0 innings throughout 54 relieving appearances with the Reds in 2011.

When New York Yankees’ pitcher C.C. Sabathia was if he would be in pinstripes for 2012, he said, “I can’t even wrap my head around that right now. I’m just thinking about what I didn’t do to help us win. I didn’t deliver. In the next couple days, next couple weeks, I’ll think about that and we’ll see what happens.”

Now that the Yankees’ season is over, the big left-hander has the option to opt-out of his contract.  If he doesn, he’s easily the most sought after starting pitcher on the market.

“I’ve loved it since Day 1 and I got here. There’s nothing like pitching in pinstripes, in front of the fans in the Bronx. I’ve had a great experience,” Sabathia said after Thursday’s game.

Sabathia is leaving four-years and a guaranteed $92 million on his contract.  However, by opting-out now, he can easily sign a new deal that will surpass the total money that he’s leaving on the table.

Last week, Tony Reagins resigned as the General Manager of the Los Angeles Angels, although he will remain on staff as an assistant to team president Dennis Kuhl.

Angels owner Arte Moreno released a statement saying, “We remained short of our objective in winning a championship. In moving forward, we felt a change was needed.”

Jim Bowden of ESPNLA.com, gives us a list of possible candidates for the GM position in Anaheim:

– Theo Epstein: The Cubs already asked permission from the Red Sox to talk to him, so why not the Angels too. It is unknown though if John Henry will give permission to any other teams points out Bowden. A source close to Epstein says that he is open to the possibility of taking over the Angels or Cubs if “president” were added to his GM title says Bowden.

– Andrew Friedman: According to Bowden, he’s been doing a great job as a GM in terms of drafting and trading veteran players for prospects. He has a philosophy of balancing new and old school analysis that will probably work well with manager Mike Scioscia adds Bowden.

– Billy Beane: A source familiar with him says that he’s been frustrated with the lack of revenues, payroll restrictions and inability to get a new stadium Bowden adds. The source adds that he’s interested in the position. The only problem here is that Beane has an ownership stake in the team.

– Josh Byrnes: He’s currently an assistant with the Padres and according to Bowden, he’s one of most intelligent and well-balanced executives on the market.

– Logan White: Bowden says that he’s one of the best evaluators in baseball. He adds that he was responsible for the Matt Kemp and Clayton Kershaw selections. White also has the tools to build a “championship-caliber” organization.

– Ben Chernington: He’s the Red Sox’s assistant GM at the moment. According to Bowden, he’s been trained by Epstein and he could follow his footsteps. He also has “experience in winning with high payrolls while building strong farm systems”.

– Al Avila: Bowden believes that he’s more than ready to take on that job. He adds that Avila has a keen eye for talent and experience under Dave Dombrowski.

– Bill Geivett: He oversees player personnel for the Rockies. Bowden says that he believes strongly in finding players with high character and building from within.

– Dan Jennings: Bowden says that the Marlins’ assistant GM has the tools to become a successful GM.

– David Frost: His strong suit is the administrative aspect of the job as a Harvard grad student says Bowden. He also adds that Frost is a strong assistant GM with personnel skills.

– Jason McLeod: He was the scouting director for the Red Sox responsible for the selections of Jacoby Ellsbury, Justin Masterson and Clay Buchholz. He also has experience in both small and big markets with the Padres and Red Sox.

– Kim Ng: She worked with the Dodgers’ front office as an assistant GM and according to Bowden she has the experience, knowledge and vision to win.

– Thad Levine: Bowden says that he’s been “heavily involved” as Jon Daniels’ wingman in building the Rangers’ current team. He has a strong business background Bowden adds.

The Cleveland Indians have a $9 million club option on Grady Sizemore for 2012, but the big question is – will they exercise it?

Sizemore has played 104 games in the last two years, and has recently had his fifth surgery in the last three years, so Indian fans have to wonder if the team will take the risk?

“Not going to speculate on that,” said GM Chris Antonetti in a text to Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer. “We’ll let you know when we have a decision on the option.”

“We are hopeful that the surgery will alleviate Grady’s symptoms in his knee and expedite his recovery,” Antonetti added.

Sizemore is expected to be ready by Spring Training, but with who?

Both center fielder B.J. Upton and designated hitter Johnny Damon say that they want to return to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012 Marc Topkin of the  St. Petersburg Times reports.

Damon signed a one-year, $5.25 million deal with the Rays last year, so he will be a free agent this winter. “I don’t even feel like packing anything up,” he said. “I felt like this was the perfect fit. … I would love to be back.”

Upton, on the other hand, is in his last year of arbitration, and according to Topkin he’s in line to receive a $7 million deal from the Rays. A lot of trade rumors have surrounded Upton, but he hopes that he could stay with the Rays.

“I’m hoping I’m back,” he said. “That’s out of my hands, I’ve got nothing to do with that. But I’ve grown up with a lot of these guys, and the guys we’ve acquired, I enjoy being around them. So hopefully next February I’m still in a Rays uniform.”

Upton hit .243/.331/.429 with 23 HR’s and 81 RBI’s in 560 AB’s for the Rays in 2011. Damon hit .261/.326/.418 with 16 HR’s and 73 RBI’s in 582 AB’s for the Rays this season.
