With free agency looming, the Cardinals are hopeful about Pujols
Posted by: | Comments
The St. Louis Cardinals and first baseman Albert Pujols may enter what many consider one of the most intriguing free agency negotiations since Alex Rodriguez’s10-year, $252 million deal with the Texas Rangers in 2000, according to an article by Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Cardinals are hoping that whatever drama may be involved, it ultimately keeps Pujols in St. Louis.
“Albert is a special player, a special person, and he means a lot to the community,” Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak ssaid. “Our hope and our goal is to keep him a Cardinal for the rest of his career.”
“I’m not going to get into strategy and a negotiation theory at this point, but obviously we have a window, and hopefully we can explore it.”
The Cardinals offered their long-time slugger a nine-year, $195 million deal last winter, but Pujols wanted a 10-year, $23 million per season deal ($230 million total).
“I don’t know what’s going to happen, I don’t think anyone does,” Pujols says. “But I think I handled it right. I just went out there every day trying to help my team win.”
“All I know is that I’ll be a free agent. We’ll see what they want to do. There are some things that you can control in this game, and other things you cannot control, and I can’t control this.”
“I’m in a great place. A peaceful place. The fans are awesome. But I can’t put a gun to their head and make them sign me.”
Pujols is wrapping up an eight-year, $116 million deal that he signed in 2004.
