Rumors for August, 2011

Sources close to Buster Olney of ESPN say that the Minnesota Twins and the Cleveland Indians are in trade talks.  Olney presumes the talks are involving Jim Thome and/or Jason Kubel.

It was reported yesterday, that both of the players were claimed by a team on Wednesday.

Former Orioles’ pitcher Mike Flanagan was found dead yesterday on his northern Baltimore County property according to sources close Gerry Sandusky of WBAL-TV 11 Sports.

Police did not immediately identify the cause of death, but sources say that he took his own life. His body was found outside his house shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Flanagan had a career record of 167-143 with a 3.90 ERA in 2770 innings throughout 526 games, 404 starts with the Orioles and Blue Jays in 18 Major League seasons. He won the Cy Young Award in 1979 and was part of the 1983 Orioles that won the World Series.

In a Tweet by Buster Olney of ESPN, he reports that Carlos Pena of the Chicago Cubs has been claimed on waivers by the Yankees. Olney later added that the Cubs and Yankees haven’t talked about Pena.

Carrie Muskat of MLB.com adds that the Cubs have pulled him off waivers.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have designated Cody Ransom for assignment to create room for Aaron Hill and John McDonald on the 25-man roster.  The other space on the roster opened up when the team traded Kelly Johnson to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday.

The Colorado Rockies have designated shortstop Ryan Rohlinger for assignment to make room for the recently acquired Kevin Kouzmanoff, according to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.

According to a Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post, the Florida Marlins have designated Dewayne Wise for assignment.  In his place, the team has recalled Logan Morrison.

According to a team announcement, the Seattle Mariners have released Matt Mangini from the 40-man roster.  In his place, the team added Anthony Vasquez who was the starting pitcher in the second game of today’s double-header.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed right-handed pitcher Nelson Figueroa to a minor league deal, Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.  Figueroa has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis.

In a Tweet by Bill Shakin of the Los Angeles Times, the Dodgers have designated catcher Dioner Navarro for assignment.  The move was made to make room for A.J. Ellis who was recalled from Triple-A.

The Baltimore Orioles have designated Felix Pie for assignment, according to Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun.  In a parallel move, the team called up Matt Angle.
