Ozzie Guillen wants extension, may leave
Posted by: | Comments
As the season comes to an end, most managers are busy helping push their respective teams to a playoff birth, or are busy assessing players that may be around next season.
Now if you are Ozzie Guillen, you fall into your own category. According to Doug Padilla of ESPNChicago, Guillen has made it known that he is prepared to walk away from the final year of his contract in 2012 if the team doesn’t have a extension in place for him before Opening Day in April.
“One thing I make clear, I don’t think I’m going to be back here for a one-year contract (in 2012) and I don’t know what to do with the next year,” Guillen said. “I think that eight years with this organization, I’m guessing we did a pretty good job. I think the players did it for me. I think we deserve more than that.”
When asked to address Guillen’s contract-extension concerns, Williams said: “Winning takes care of a lot of things. I might even get an extension if we win.” The Sox are 68-65, winners of five straight and are only five back of the AL Central leading Tigers.
The Marlins who are moving into a new ballpark next season, have made their interest in Ozzie known. This past offseason, rumors surfaced the the White Sox were looking at “trading” Ozzie’s managerial rights to the Marlins.
Guillen is 668-600 in eight seasons as the skipper of the White Sox.

If the Texas Rangers determine that they need an additional outfielder to fill in for the injured Nelson Cruz, Lance Berkman of the St. Louis Cardinals could be a prime candidate, Gerry Fraley of The Dallas Morning News reports.
“We’re waiting on Nellie’s MRI before we do anything,” general manager Jon Daniels said. “But more than likely, any moves we make will be from inside the organization.”
Berkman’s contract expires after the season and his one-month prorated portion would be $1.33 million. Fraley says that Berkman is believed to have cleared waivers.

In an article by Bob Dutton of The Kansas City Star, he reports that Royals’ GM Dayton Moore is willing to part with the organization’s top Minor League prospects this off season to acquire reliable starting pitching.
“We’ll be aggressive in trades,” Moore said. “We’ll try to make a trade or two that helps us. We have to look internally first, but then we have to look at trades. Then, finally, we have to look at free agency. We’ll explore all of those options.”
Specific names were not mentioned, but Dutton reminds us that the Royals are rich in Minor League talent including six Minor Leaguers that are on the Top 100 prospect list according to Baseball America. This is in addition to Eric Hosmer, Johnny Giavotella, Danny Duffy, Mike Moustakas and Salvador Perez.
“We have a minor-league system that’s ranked pretty good,” Moore said. “So we’ll see what’s out there. We’re a pitcher or two away.”
