Possible suitors for Jose Reyes

Posted by: juan | Comments View Comments

Shortstop Jose Reyes will become a free agent at the end of this season, and Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated provides us a list of possible destinations for Reyes.

San Francisco Giants: Heyman believes the Giants are a “natural fit” for Reyes. The Giants are a big-market team, and they could use not only an offensive boost, but also a short stop.

Los Angeles Angels: Reyes’ speed would fit into Mike Scioscia’s running game as Heyman points out. But the Angles have three important pieces that will become free agents after the 2012 season- Jered Weaver, Dan Haren and Ervin Santana- and that could negatively impact the chances of the Angels signing Reyes.

Washington Nationals: They decided to spend big this winter by signing Jayson Werth, and they could do the same this year with Reyes.

St. Louis Cardinals: Albert Pujols is their priority, but if he signs elsewhere, Reyes could be a good piece to pick up.

Detroit Tigers: Even though Johnny Peralta is having a good year, Heyman says that owner Mike Ilitch has occasionally stretched to win.

Philadelphia Phillies: Jimmy Rollins will become a free agent and Heyman believes they won’t spend that big on a short stop. But you can’t rule them out either way.

Boston Red Sox: Their top prospect, Jose Iglesias, is unproven as a hitter, but the Red Sox are considered as a long shot as well.

New York Yankees: Heyman believes Derek Jeter still have another solid year at shortstop left in him, so signing Reyes would be a long shot.

Atlanta Braves: They traded for Michael Bourn, so they have a lead off hitter now, and with Alex Gonzalez at short stop they won’t probable go after Reyes.
