Rumors for August, 2011

The Chicago Cubs will be without pitcher Carlos Zambrano for 30 days after the team placed him on the disqualified list, according to the team (via ESPNChicago.com’s Bruce Levine).  Zambrano will receive no pay during this time.

The right-hander gave up five home runs in a 10-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Friday and also was ejected after throwing at Chipper Jones.  Zambrano was cleaning out his locker and told trainers and clubhouse people that he was “retiring”.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated Tim Wood for assignment, according to Paul Zeise of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.  The move was done to place Ross Ohlendorf on the team’s 40-man roster.

The St. Louis Cardinals have designated Raul Valdes for assignment to make room for the recently signed Arthur Rhodes to be placed on the 40-man roster, according to B.J. Rains of FOXSportsMidewest.com.

According to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated, the Los Angeles Dodgers have signed first round pick Chris Reed for $1.589 million.

Reed sits 92-94 as a reliever with two off-speed pitches. He adds a sharp, short slider in the 82-84MPH range to that fastball and will show a very hard-fading changeup in the upper 70’s and ceilings as a 2-3 starter.

The St. Louis Cardinals have unconditionally released left-handed pitcher Ron Mahay, according to the Memphis Redbirds account on Twitter.

The 40-year-old Mahay last pitched in the Majors in 2010.  He has a career 27-12 record with a 3.83 ERA in 568 innings pitched.

The Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to terms, pending a physical, with left handed hitter Jack Cust according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. If he passes he’ll report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley adds Zolecki.

Earlier this month the Mariners released Cust. The 32-year-old Cust was hitting .213 with three home runs and 23 RBIs in 67 games for the Mariners this season.

The Cleveland Indians designated Austin Kearns for assignment according to Paul Hoynes of the Plain dealer. This movement will create room for Shin-Soo Choo who was activated from the Disabled List today.

Kearns is hitting .200/.302/.287 with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI’s in 150 AB’s for the Indians in 2011.

Here’s a running list of injury updates around the Major Leagues:

– Nationals first baseman Mike Morse is listed day-to-day with a left elbow contusion according to William Ladson of MLB.com.

Carlos Beltran, who has been sidelined for the last three days with pain and inflammation in his right hand, is still doubtful to play today reports Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News. Manager Bruce Bochy said Beltran could be heading to the DL if he couldn’t play today.

Alex Rodriguez is expected to come off the Disabled List next week according to Joe Girardi (via Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com). Rodriguez is scheduled to be the designated hitter in a Minor League rehab game today, and to play third base tomorrow.

– Orioles starter Jake Arrieta decided to undergo season-ending surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow reports Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. Arrieta hopes to begin his normal throwing program in late November or early December and expects to be ready for Spring Training adds Connolly.

– It appears that Nationals catcher Ivan Rodriguez “is not doing too well” according to Davey Johnson (via Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post). He suffered another setback that required an epidural shot over the weekend and it is still unknown when he’ll be back.

Cardinals sign Arthur Rhodes

The St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a deal with left handed pitcher Arthur Rhodes according to Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post Dispatch. Rhodes was placed on release waivers by the Rangers earlier this week.

The 41-year old veteran is 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA in 32 relief appearances this season.

Right-handed pitcher Dave Bush has opted out of his contract with the Triple-A Cubs, Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald reports.

The Cubs signed the righty in mid-July.  He was previously released by the Rangers  in early July.

Bush 0-1 with a 5.71 ERA in 17 appearances for the Rangers. The 31-year-old has a career 56-69 record with a 4.70 career ERA.
