Diamondbacks and Andrew Chafin close to deal

The Arizona Diamondbacks and supplemental first-round pick Andrew Chafin are close to an agreement, according to two sources close to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Daily Republic. Chafin still has to complete his physical, but Piecoro believes that the deal will get done.

Here’s a running list of injury updates around the Major Leagues:
– The Detroit Tigers have placed Carlos Guillen on the Disabled List with a sore left wrist according to the team’s official Twitter account.
– The San Francisco Giants have placed Andres Torres on the Disabled List with a contusion to his lower right leg according to the team’s official Twitter account.
– The Atlanta Braves placed right handed pitcher Tommy Hanson on the Disabled List with right shoulder tendinitis, retroactive to August, 7 according to the team’s official Twitter account.
– The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed first baseman Derrek Lee on the Disabled List with a bone fracture in his left wrist according to the team’s official Twitter account.
– The Detroit Tigers placed Al Alburquerque on the 7-day Disabled List with a concussion according to Jeff Seidel of MLB.com. Albuquerque was hit in the head during batting practice before Friday’s game against the Orioles.

The Florida Marlins have released Wes Helms, Joe Capozzi of The Palm Beach Post reports.
The Marlins previously extended Helms’ contract for one-year at $1 million in August 2010.

Cubs and Javier Baez agree to terms

The Chicago Cubs and first-round pick Javier Baez have agreed to terms, according to a Tweet by Kendall Rogers of Perfect Game USA. The shortstop was the ninth overall pick in the June 2011 MLB Draft.

Yankees sign Scott Proctor to a Minor League deal

The New York Yankees have signed Scott Proctor to a Minor League deal, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.
Proctor was released by the Atlanta Braves on August 10. He was 2-3 with a 6.44 ERA in 29 1/3 innings throughout 31 games for the Braves this season.

Cardinals unconditionally release RHP Blaine Boyer

In a Tweet by the St. Louis Cardinals Triple-A club, the Memphis Red Birds, the team announced that right-handed pitcher Blaine Boyer was unconditionally released.
Boyer, 29, pitched in five games with the New York Mets this season. He went 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA.

Arizona Diamondbacks sign Lyle Overbay

The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed Lyle Overbay, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. In a corresponding move, the team announced that they have designated Juan Jaime for assignment.
Overbay will fill the void that Xavier Nady left when he was placed on the DL with a broken hand and will miss six weeks.
