According to Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News the San Francisco Giants have designated Miguel Tejada and Aaron Roward for assignment. GM Brian Sabean said he will try to trade one or both players as soon as today.

Several sources close to Baggarly have said that both players have been complaining throughout the season about their lack of playing time.

“It comes down to a simple explanation: There’s only so much playing time,” Sabean said. “As we wind down, whether its the fans or the press, if this stays ugly, we’ll try to get people ready for next year, and try to win and develop at the same time. That’s part of it, too.”

In corresponding moves, the team activated Pat Burrell from the disabled list and purchased the contract of Brett Pill from Triple-A.

Washington National and baseball fans can rejoice. The 2009 first overall pick in the MLB draft will make his return from last year’s Tommy John surgery and start for the Nats on September 6, according to the Associated Press.

Manager Davey Johnson will start him at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

“I’ve got a spot open for him,” Johnson said.

“This is the time of year you look at young players,” Johnson added. “That’s what you do at this time of year when you’re not in a pennant race. And unfortunately, we’re not in one.”

Strasburg last pitched in August 2010 before the team announced that the right-hander would undergo Tommy John surgery. He recently was clocked at 98 mph in a recent rehab start.
