The Tigers and Mariners have agreed to a deal that will send RHP Doug Fister and David Pauley to the Tigers for Charlie Furbush, Casper Wells and Francisco Martinez who is a top prospect reports Jon Heyman of SI.com.
Martinez was ranked as the 4th best prospect in the Tigers system by Baseball America entering into the season. He has good bat speed but has suspect power.
Jerry Crasnick of ESPN adds that Fister, who is making$436,500, fits the Tigers budget better than a pricey veteran. He is cheaper and has more upside than Jeremy Guthrie and Jason Marquis both pitchers the Tigers had been linked to.
Danny Knobler of CBSSports noted early on that left Charlie Furbush would be part of the package Seattle received. He also noted that the Tigers were looking to acquire a bullpen arm from Seattle as well but mentioned the bullpen piece would not be Brandon League.
Fister is expendable for the Mariners given the fact they have Felix Hernandez and Michael Pineda in the Majors and possibly Daniel Hultzen and Taijuan Walker coming up soon Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated notes.
Fister is 3-12 but has a 3.33 ERA with a 5.5 k/9 rate. Fister could be a better option then some of the other pitchers the Tigers have been linked to since Fister would be under team control until 2015.
