The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right-handed pitcher Mike Crotta for assignment, according to a team press release. The move was done to accommodate the recently acquired Ryan Ludwick.  Ludwick was acquired from the San Diego Padres earlier on Sunday.

The 26-year-old Crotta appeared in 15 career games for the Pirates (all in 2011).  He was 0-1 with a 9.28 ERA (11 earned runs over 10 2/3 innings pitched).
