Rumors for July, 2011

The Cincinnati Reds recently scouted hurlers Jason Vargas and Doug Fister from the Seattle Mariners, according to a source close to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.

Earlier this week, we learned that the Reds would like to acquire a starting pitcher. They have their eyes on Ubaldo Jimenez and Wandy Rodriguez but both pitchers may be to expensive.

The Mariners, are willing to trade some of their pitchers, with Vargas and Fister’s names being placed on the market.

Vargas is 6-8 with a 3.94 ERA in 130.1 innings this season for the Mariners.

Fister is 3-11 with a 3.30 ERA in 139 innings for the Mariners.

The Detroit Tiger and the Dodgers have recently discussed a trade that would send Hiroki Kuroda to the Tigers, sources close to Ken Rosenthal And Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com say. Though the teams are discussing a deal, nothing is close.

Even if a deal is agreed upon, the biggest hurdle of all is getting Kuroda to waive his no-trade clause. Kuroda has said he will not provide a list of teams he would accept a trade to but will analyze each potential deal on a case-by-case basis.

The Rangers, Indians, Red Sox all have checked in on the right hander in recent days.

Kuroda who signed a one-year $12 million deal is  6-11 with a 3.13 era in 120.2 innings.

Even though the Chicago Cubs will be sellers at the deadline, their closer, Kerry Wood, may not part of the group that will be traded. Wood could help any contending bullpen is apparently not willing to waive his no-trade clause Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports.

He adds that Wood will probably resign with Cubs. Earlier this week, we learned that the right hander could be a possibility for the Diamondbacks who are fighting the Giants in the NL West and are looking to strengthen their bullpen. The 34-year old veteran is 1-5 with a 3.56 ERA in 32 appearances this year.

The Boston Red Sox have spoken with the Kansas City Royals about right fielder Jeff Francoeur, multiple sources have told FOX Sports, as reported by Jon Paul Morosi. One source said that the talks were of an “exploratory” nature.

Melky Cabrera was mentioned this week as another player that the Royals could deal, but Merosi speculates that the team will not deal both players.

In a Tweet by Adam Rubin of ESPN, he reports that the New York Mets have designated Nick Evans for assignment to clear a roster spot for David Wright.

According to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, the Phildelphia Phillies have designated Danys Baez for assignment.

In 2011, Baez had a record of 2-4 with a 6.25 ERA in 29 relief appearances.

The New York Yankees have signed Marcus Thames to a Minor League deal, George A. King III of the New York Post reports. Thames will work out in Tampa before reporting to Scranton/Wilkes-Barnes.

The 34-year-old Thames was released by the Dodgers this week.  He was hitting .197/.243/.333 with 2 home runs on the season.

In a tweet by Buster Olney of ESPN, he says that it is highly doubtful the Phillies would give up Domonic Brown or the Giants Zack Wheeler in order to acquire Carlos Beltran.

Earlier today, Olney said that there are five serious teams in the hunt for. The finalists are the Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves and the Texas Rangers.  The Cleveland Indians and the Pittsburgh Pirates are out of the conversations.

Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano has more than $60 million remaining on his eight-year, $136 million deal he signed in 2006. The team would be willing to eat a large portion of his contract if the right offer comes along reports Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com.

Even though Soriano has a full no-trade clause, he has said before that if the Cubs approached him about a trade, he would most likely agree to one.

Levine says that American League teams could use Soriano as a designated hitter, although he would be an expensive one. Soriano is hitting .249/.291/.445 with 14 HR’s and 41 RBI’s in 281 AB’s for the Cubs this season.

The Florida Marlins are apparently looking for a veteran third baseman and have turned their attention to Brandon Inge, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com reports.

Inge was designated for assignment yesterday by the Tigers to make room for Wilson Betemit was acquired from the Royals.

The third baseman is making $5.5 million this year and is under contract for $5.5 million in 2012. He also have a club option for 2013 at $6 million, with a $500,000 buyout.
