According to Jane Lee of MLB.com, the A’s have designated Andy LaRoche for assignment. The move creates a roster spot for Grant Balfour who is returning from the paternity list.

LaRoche had played all four infield positions this season where he hit .247 in 107 plate appearances.

Balfour returns to an Oakland bullpen that has been taxed during the Boston series having to use 13 different pitchers to throw 12 innings.

Balfour on the season is 3-1 with a 2.92 era with 28 strikeouts in 24.2 innings.
