Gabe Gross retires

Posted by: juan | Comments View Comments

According to Jon Johnson of DothanEagle.com, Gabe Gross has decided to retire from baseball. “I just felt like my heart wasn’t into it,” he said. “This and quitting football are the two hardest decisions I’ve ever made.”

Gross agreed to a Minor League deal with the Marlins last week and was scheduled to take a physical on Monday, but he decided to retire on Sunday. “I didn’t think it was right for me or my family if I couldn’t do it 100%, because it takes 100%,” said Gross. “Sometimes you’ve just got to move on. For 10 years I’ve been able to provide for my family through baseball I’ve been extremely blessed.”

The 31-year old outfielder was released by the Mariners back in March. He signed a Minor League deal with the Mariners early in February. Gross hit .239/.290/.311 with 1 HR and 25 RBI’s in 222 AB’s with the Oakland Athletics last season.

Former Major League outfielder Carl Everett was jailed on aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charges after getting in a dispute with his wife on Monday night in Hillsborough County, Florida.  Everett pointed a gun at her head and then broke two cell phones after she attempted to call for help, according to Howard Altman of The Tampa Tribune. The 39-year-old is being held in jail with no bond set.

The argument reportedly escalated when Everett pointed a silver handgun and pressed it against his wife’s head.  Everett’s wife, Linda Everett, tried to call 911, but her phone was grabbed by the outfielder, and he broke it.  The wife tried to grab another phone to call for help, but that phone was also broken by Everett.

Everett played from 1993-2006 and during his time with eight Major League teams, he amassed a .271/.341/.462 average with 202 home runs in 1405 games played.

The San Francisco Giants are letting teams know that outfielder Nate Schierholtz is available, Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports. Schierholtz could be the “odd-man” out when Andres Torres returns from his Achilles injury.

Schierholtz was a trade candidate late in Spring Training when the team had an abundance of outfielders in addition to prized prospect Brandon Belt.  A late injury to Cody Ross prevented the possibility of a trade.

Through 17 games this season, Schierholtz is hitting .226/.226/.387 with one home run and three RBIs.

The Angels are fresh off an uneventful weekend where they were swept by the Red Sox and looked over matched in almost every aspect of the game. Thankfully for the Angels, the A’s came to town today and they sent Jered Weaver to the mound who happens to be the hottest pitcher in all of baseball.

In his first five starts this season, Weaver has gone 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA while averaging a little over seven innings a start. Not a bad guy to help your team end a four-game skid.

Weaver came through when his team needed him by pitching his second straight complete game, while allowing seven hits, 10 strike outs and lowering his ERA to 0.99.

Weaver is the first pitcher in the majors with six victories in his team’s first 23 games since Randy Johnson did it with the 1992 Arizona Diamondbacks . Johnson when on that year to a 24-5 record with a 2.32 ERA that year and winning the NL Cy Young Award.

With this victory, Weaver becomes the fourth overall pitcher to reach 6-0 (March/April) in MLB history since Brandon Webb did it in 2008.

The Angels have a total of 13 victories meaning that Weaver has accounted for almost half of the teams wins.

As a baseball player, you’re always looking for a winning streak. But sometimes practicing, training and focusing on your game doesn’t do the trick.

That’s why, sometimes you have to go a little deeper just to get on the winning track. I’ve heard baseball players say they change their eating habits if that makes them obtain better results. Some other players use “lucky” items such as socks, hats, underwear, necklaces, wristbands, etc. The sky is the limit for wacky superstition behavior.

I, for example, don’t shave my beard for the entire season, and don’t wash my hat during the season either (just the hat, the rest of the uniform I do). More recently, I’ve been getting a Mohawk in the Finals too.

As a kid I thought most superstitions were ridiculous, but as I grew up I became a superstitious man, but only around baseball.

Dodgers’ manager, Don Mattingly, is sporting a goatee recently, and coincidentally the goatee appeared at the beginning of the team’s winning streak. He said the goatee is staying even though his wife wants him to shave (via Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times).

“It stays for a couple more days,” Mattingly said. “I have at least 10 more days until I see Lori again.”

Catcher Rod Barajas doesn’t want his manager to shave his goatee either. “He has some white in there,” Barajas said. “He might want to try Just For Men. I feel bad for his wife, but that’s the game. The hair’s staying. This game is all about superstition.”

Barajas couldn’t be more right, “this game is all about superstition,” the problem is why? And the answer is I don’t know, and I don’t care, as long as it keeps getting results Mattingly’s beard will stay, my beard will stay and Brian Wilson’s beard will stay. It’s a matter of confidence and wacky superstitions.

So to all our family, wives, girlfriends, etc. try to understand that this is our way of helping us perform at the top of our game on the field. It’s not to tick you off, ok well maybe not all the time.

Major League Baseball has named Tom Schieffer as the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Trustee.  Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times was the first to report the likelihood of the announcement.

Schiffer joined an investment group (along with former President George W. Bush) to purchase the Texas Rangers Baseball Club in April 1989.  He helped negotiate a deal to build the Ballpark in Arlington and he eventually became President of the Rangers in January 1991.  He held that post  until April 1999.

Major League Baseball took over the Dodgers on April 20 because of deep concerns over the team’s finances and operations.

Tony LaRussa’s daughter, Bianca LaRussa has become one of the newest members of the Oakland Raiders cheerleading squad according to her Twitter account. Bianca attended the cheerleading tryouts and was picked.

She says it’s a goal and a dream come true to become a Raiderette. So, with the NFL on the verge of a lockout, we can only hope they don’t so we can see Tony’s daughter make her dream come true.

Tony, once the manager of the Oakland Athletics, will have to root for the Raiders from now on, or at least pretend to just for his daughter. If Bianca has her father’s managerial mind, she could climb the Raiders’ organization ladder from cheerleader to head coach and maybe take the team to the Super Bowl one day.

Yesterday, we learned that the Blue Jays placed Aaron Hill on the 15-day Disabled List. Manager John Farrell said Edwin Encarnacion is expected to be available on Monday.

Both injuries have forced the team to juggle John McDonald and Chris Woodward throughout the lineup, but according Bill Lankhof of the Toronto Sun prospect Brett Lawrie is not likely to be called up before August.

“We’re extremely excited about the day Brett Lawrie arrives,” said Farrell. “But we have to let him to take his developmental path, not sacrifice that. We have to do what’s right for Lawrie first.”

Lawrie was moved to third base during Spring Training. “Defence has been solid. There’s been a couple of errors where he’s thrown on the run and not set his feet,” added Farrell. “He has arm strength, good range all the adjectives. But the fact is he’s had seven weeks playing a new position. He can play it but we want to be sure we give him enough game awareness that when he comes up here it’s not just survival but that he has the background to make the proper decisions.”

The third baseman is hitting .425/.468/.712 with 4 HR’s and 12 RBI’s in 73 AB’s with the Blue Jays’ Triple-A team.
