Steve Bartman film to lead ESPN Sports Film Festival

By Allan

A film about Steve Bartman and his infamous play during the 2003 NLCS is the subject of Catching Hell – a film that leads the list at the 5th Annual Tribeca/ESPN Sports Film Festival to be held in New York on April 20.

The film was originally to be part of ESPN’s 30 for 30 film series, but it wasn’t ready in time.  Michael McCarthy of USA Today says the movie will explore “the psychology of die-hard sports fans, the frightening phenomenon of scapegoating and the hysteria that turned mild-mannered Bartman into the most hated man in Chicago.”

The film is written an directed by Alex Gibney and is centered around the pop fly that Bartman deflected away from Cubs left fielder Moises Alou that arguably cost the Cubs a trip to the World Series.
