Rumors for March, 2011

The San Francisco Giants have decided to promote 22-year-old first baseman, Brandon Belt, to the big league club, John Shea of The San Francisco Chronicle Tweets. When told of his promotion by manager Bruce Bochy, the young infielder started to cry.

Although Belt was doing well in Spring Training, many expected him to open up in Triple-A to play everyday. However, with Cody Ross‘ recent injury, the Giants have the option to move Aubrey Huff to the outfield and give Belt the spot at first.

Promoting Belt this early could pose problems in the long run for the team’s budget if he succeeds. Players traditionally need three years of Major League service time to be eligible for salary arbitration, but if Belt succeeds in his rookie and sophomore year and the Giants do not demote him, he could qualify as a Super Two (the top 17% of players in their second year). Anytime salary arbitration comes around, there’s potential for a player to cost the team millions in salary as opposed to the $400,000 and change due to them as a Major League minimum.

According to a team announcement, the Kansas City  Royals have designated catcher Lucas May for assignment.

May, 26, was one of the two Minor League players that the Royals received in the July 2010 trade that involved outfielder Scott Podsednik. The other player the Royals received was Single-A right-handed pitcher Elisaul Pimental.

The right-handed hitting backstop made his Major League debut with the Royals as a September call-up.  He played in 12 games and hit .289 (7-for-37).  During his brief time with the Royals he made nine starts.

“I always dreamed of making it to big leagues as a shortstop,” May said in September according to The Kansas City Star. “But when I converted to catching, I took to it, and I’m glad it happened.

The Houston Astros plan to designate right-handed pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith, according to Alyson Footer.

The 28-year-old was hoping to find a spot in the team’s rotation, but as of last week the team was looking to trade the pitcher. The rotation was set and the bullpen was overloaded with lefties that included Fernando Abad, Gustavo Chacin and Wesley Wright.

The Astros signed Rowland-Smith to a one-year, $725,000 deal plus incentives back in December 2010.  Given his affordable contract and his lack of Major League service time (he’ll be under team control until 2013), Goff speculates that Rowland-Smith won’t be too hard to move.

In 115 appearances for the Seattle Mariners, Rowland-Smith has a 12-17 record with a 4.57 ERA.

The New York Yankees have designated right-handed pitcher Romulo Sanchez for assignment.  The pitcher will accept an offer to play in Japan.

The move was first reported by Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News. Feinsand at the time did not know where he was headed.

Sanchez only appeared in two games last season with the Yankees. He pitched 4.1 innings allowing one hit while walking three batters and striking out five opponents.

What does it mean to clear waivers?

At this time of the year, players under contract that do not have options are usually sent through the waiver process.  The waiver process lasts three business days at which point the player can be claimed by one or more teams.  The Wikipedia best explains the process if a player is claimed

– arrange a trade with the claiming team for that player within two business days of the claim; or

– rescind the request and keep the player on its major league roster, effectively canceling the waiver; or

– do nothing and allow the claiming team to assume the player’s existing contract, pay the waiving team a waiver fee, and place the player on its active major league roster.

The waiver wire is traditionally a secret, but player names do get leaked out to the media especially during the month of August when most players are sent through waivers to make them trade eligible. Many of the teams have their 25-man rosters set or nearly set as of now, so it’s likely that most players waived will go through the entire process and be sent to the Minors.

So with that said, here’s a list of a few notable players that cleared waivers today:

– Chicago Cubs catcher Max Ramirez clears waivers and was sent to Triple-A Iowa (ESPNChicago.com)

– New York Mets INF/OF Nick Evans has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo. (Adam Rubin, ESPNNewYork.com)

– Arizona Diamondbacks Tony Abreu has cleared waivers and will head to Triple-A. (Kirk Gibson via Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic)

– Kansas City Royals OF Gregor Blanco cleared waivers and will be sent to Triple-A Omaha. (Bob Dutton, Kansas City Star)

– New York Mets INF Luis Hernandez cleared waivers and will have three days to decide if he wants to accept a Minor League assignment. (Anthony DiComo, MLB.com)

– Baltimore Orioles right-handed pitcher Rick VandenHurk cleared waivers. (Jeff Zrebiec, Baltimore Sun)

– San Francisco Giants place first baseman Travis Ishikawa on waivers. (John Shae, San Francisco Chronicle)

Phillies release Luis Castillo

Posted by: juan | Comments View Comments

According to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com, the Philadelphia Phillies have released second baseman Luis Castillo.

Castillo was released by the Mets earlier this month and was quickly linked to Marlins and Phillies – both teams with question marks at second base. He finally signed a Minor League deal with the Phillies last week.

The switch hitter posted a .604 OPS in 2011, which ranked 291st among 305 players with at least 250 plate appearances in the majors last year and he’s owed $6 million in the last year of his four-year $24 million contract.
