In September 2009 in a game between the San Francisco Giants and the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park, first baseman Prince Fielder hit a home run in the 13th innings in a walk off victory over the Giants. The slugger jumped on home plate surrounded by his teammates, who fell backwards as if knocked down by a bowling ball to celebrate the home run.
That Giants, who were in the race for the pennant at that moment, didn’t take Fielder’s celebration very well, especially since the Brewers were out of the race at the time. When the following Spring rolled around and Fielder was facing Giants’ lefty Barry Zito, he threw the ball right between the numbers on his back. At that moment nothing happened, but in today’s game between the Giants and Brewers the two of them shared some words, according to Adam McCalvy of MLB.com.
After ball four, the lefty asked plate umpire Stephen Barga if it was close. “Prince was letting me know that it was a ball,” Zito said.
McCalvy says that Fielder was still talking when he reached first base, and both players had a different explanation for the conversation.
“Yeah, we talked a little bit,” said Zito. “Caught up. Asked him how his off-season was. Family’s good. No new tattoos.”
“I like Barry, I really do,” said Fielder. “Scott [Boras] called and we have dinner tonight. I asked him which one we were going to. I said Houston’s. He thought Flemming’s.” After that the first baseman let out a big laugh and didn’t say anything else about the incident but “It wasn’t serious. It was just talk.”
A fight between the two of them doesn’t seem fair at all, Fielder is 55 lbs heavier than Zito even though he is 4” taller. We could be looking at a heavyweight against a featherweight fight, and unless Zito has the fighting skills of Manny Pacquiao the fight would probably last about 5 seconds.
