Cashman denying Liriano rumors
Posted by: | Comments
Over the weekend, rumors about a trade between the New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins involving Francisco Liriano surfaced. In a Tweet by Wallace Matthews of ESPNNewYork.com, Cashman said, “I’m not talking to anyone about anything right now. Nobody’s available. Nobody of value, anyway.”
New York is in desperate need to solidify the back end of their rotation. The rumors of the Yankees’ interest in the left-hander started to surface in December, but no formal offers were made.
The 27-year-old can become a free agent after the 2012 season and with a solid 2010 season Liriano has revamped his trade value from when he made only 14 starts due to injuries in 2008 and pitched to a 5.80 era in 2009.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced that pitcher Adam Wainwright underwent Tommy John surgery this morning by Dr. Paletta. GM John Mozeliak confirmed that the procedure went very well. The right-hander is expected to miss the entire 2011 season due to the surgery.
The Cardinals are expected to fill the rotation void by promoting from within. Kyle McClellan and Miguel Batista are among those internal candidates.
However, if the internal candidates do not pan out during the Spring, it would be likely that the team goes after an available free agent such as Kevin Millwood.

Bobby Valentine lining up bid to buy Mets?
Posted by: | Comments
New York Mets fans may not have gotten former skipper Bobby Valentine to lead their team on the field for 2011, but he may be apart of the team in the near future. According to a baseball official close to ESPNNewYork.com and Adam Rubin, Valentine has spoken with investors to buy a portion of his former employer.
“I’’ve talked to a number of people interested in purchasing part of the New York Mets, but I’’m not formally with any group that is actively pursuing this venture,” Valentine said.
The Mets’ ownership recently expressed an interest in selling 20-25 percent of the team in the wake of a lawsuit brought upon them by victims of the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme. That portion is valuated in the neighborhood of $214.5 million.
Additionally, the team acknowledged that they received a loan from Major League Baseball to deal with their cash flow shortage. The loan is believed to be at least $25 million.
Valentine is currently an analyst for ESPN. He last managed the Mets in 2002 before he was fired after the season. It was almost certain that Valentine was going to become the manager of the Florida Marlins in mid-2010. Ultimately the organization decided to go in another direction with Edwin Rodriguez.
