Yankees exploring the option of signing Rafael Soriano?

By Allan

In an article by Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News, a source tells him that the Yankees are “exploring” the option of signing former Tampa Bay Rays closer Rafael Soriano. The Yankees had preliminary discussions with Soriano’s agent, Scott Boras.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post later said via Twitter that the Yankees are not in on Soriano.

General manager Brian Cashman was said to be willing to give Soriano “closer money” to have him backup Mariano Rivera with the expectation that Soriano will succeed Rivera when he retires.

“They don’t know where Boras is going to take this,” the source said. “They’re not going to go crazy.”
The soon-to-be 31-year-old right-hander was -32 with a 1.73 ERA with 45 saves for the Rays in 2010.
