The New York Yankees and the Texas Rangers were the front-runners in Lee’s pursuit, although his name was briefly linked to teams like the Nationals, Red Sox and Angels. However, almost everybody knew (even Nolan Ryan) that the Yankees had the dump truck full of cash on the driveway of Lee’s Arkansas home.
By the time it was time for Lee to sign, a “Mystery Team” appeared and ended up hitting the jackpot for the left handed pitcher. Almost out of nowhere, the Philadelphia Phillies won the Lee Sweepstakes.
