According to sources close to the New York Daily News’ Andy Martino, former New York Mets’ GM Omar Minaya has been offered a position as special assistant to the Arizona Diamondbacks’s GM Kevin Towers. The source adds nothing is imminent, but Minaya was expected to meet with current Met’s GM Sandy Alderson to see how he could fit in the new Mets’ front office.

Minaya is under contract with New York through 2012, but he has not decided what to d. He’s good friends for owner Fred Wilpon, and he says that he would like to stay in New York. It’s believed that he was being paid a little more than $1 million per season as the team’s GM.

The Diamondbacks’ interest in Minaya was first reported by the Wall St. Journal.

New York Yankees closer, Mariano Rivera, told friends (via Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman) that he would like to get a two-year deal form the team. The sides have yet to talk terms of a new contract.

When GM Brian Cashman was asked last week if other teams were pursuing free agents Derek Jeter and Rivera, he said, “I hope not. But I’m sure we’ll wind up paying them as if there are.”

Rivera, 41, was a 3-3 with a 1.80 ERA and 33 saves in 2010 with the Yankees. He made $15 million last season, in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract.

Free agent designated hitter and outfielder Vladimir Guerrero is talking with the Texas Rangers and three other American League teams, according to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman. Heyman adds that he’s looking for a multi-year deal.

Earlier this week, Héctor Gómez of listindiario.com said that Guerrero is looking for a two or three-year deal.

Guerrero just wrapped up a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Texas Rangers – a bargain compared to others. He’s hoping to cash in on his successful 2010 season with a nice long-term deal.

The Texas Rangers declined a $9 million option for 2011, but the team is still interested in bringing the DH/OF back.

“When we signed Vlad last winter, the intent behind the deal was a one year agreement, while the option was a way for us to move some of the salary into the buyout,” Rangers GM Jon Daniels said earlier this month. “We agreed at that time it wouldn’t be exercised. Vlad was outstanding for us this year, on the field and in the clubhouse, and was a big reason we won the American League. No one is closing any doors.”

Guerrero helped the Rangers reach their first World Series hitting .300 with 29 HR and 115 RBI’s this past season.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman, the New York Yankees are about to make a three-year, $45 million offer to Derek Jeter.

The New York Posts’ Joel Sherman said earlier that New York was to make a three-year offer before the end of this week, and at the time he predicted the $45 million range.  Sherman speculated that it will leave negotiation room to climb toward $57-60 million on a three or four-year deal.

Yesterday, the USA Today’s Bob Nightengale speculated that should the Boston Red Sox acquire Justin Upton from the Arizona Diamondbacks, they likely would have to give up setup man Daniel Bard and center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury.

MLB.com’s Ian Browne wonders if the Red Sox would actually go through with that.  Browne says, “Bard is one of the most dominant setup men in the game and should be ready to step in as the closer should Jonathan Papelbon leave as a free agent following the 2011 season.”

Browne thinks that Ellsbury and a prospect getting moved is a realistic situation, but adding Bard into the deal is likely too high.

According to sources close to FOXSports’ Jon Paul Morosi, the New York Yankees are interested in free agent reliever J.C. Romero.

Romero, 34, was 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA in 60 appearances for the Phillies in 2010. There was a mutual option for $4.5 million in 2011, but that was declined at the end of October.

Ken Davidoff of Newsday added on November 16 that New York had interest in Pedro Feliciano. The team is also expected to pursue Scott Downs.
