Rumors for October, 2010
Reds may not exercise option on Orlando Cabrera
Posted by: | Comments
The 2010 Cincinnati Reds may be on the verge of change just days after being swept away by the Phillies. According to Brad Johansen of WKRC the first player on his way out may be Orlando Cabrera. Cabrera who signed a 1-yr $2.2mm contract with a mutual option for 2011 at $4mm. If Cincinnati declines the option, the buyout will be for $1MM and if Cabrera declines, it will be for $500K.
Cabrera may not have earned his keep with the bat this year, but he made up for it with his leadership in the clubhouse and also with his bat boy skills. Reds GM Walt Jocketty had this to say about the situation, “It’s probably more than we want to exercise, we’ll try to find a happy medium..if not Janish would be our SS”. There is a possibility that Cabrera will realize that he had a down year and may look to work out a deal for less money to stay with the Reds.

Lyle Overbay ready to test free agency

First baseman Lyle Overbay is ready to test the free agent waters, but he isn’t sure what the outcome will be. Overbay thinks it could be anything from a multi-year deal to a Minor League contract, according to MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian.
“It’s something I’ve never gone through. Hopefully, it’ll be fun,” Overbay said. “At the same time, you don’t know. I’m not going to be disappointed if I don’t get what I want. I don’t expect a whole lot, but you never know.”
It’s not known if the Toronto Blue Jays will want to sign their first baseman since 2006. There was speculation toward the end of August that Overbay could be traded. The Tampa Bay Rays were a good fit at the time, and now with Carlos Peña likely leaving via free agency, Overbay could take over. If the Blue Jays pass on Overbay, it’s likely that GM Alex Anthopoulos will hit the trade market or free agency.

Jim Edmonds pondering retirement

Is Jim Edmonds retiring or will he rehab his injured achilles tendon that he sustained when he hit a home run in his final regular season at-bat in September?
“I’m done,” said Edmonds, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Rick Hummel.
It’s not clear if he’s “done” for now or “done” forever.
“I’ll have to ask the wife (Allison) about that,” Edmonds added.
If Edmonds could be a backup first baseman somewhere, he would consider coming back for another year. “But I’m in kind of wait-and-see mode right now,” he said.
The 40-year-old Edmonds unexpectedly came out of retirement this past winter when he signed a Minor League deal with the Milwaukee Brewers. He was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in August to help the team make a post season run.

Jon Daniels on New York Mets GM radar?
Posted by: | Comments
Could Texas Rangers’ general manager Jon Daniels return to his native Queens and take the vacant New York Mets GM position? Newsday’s David Lennon says Daniels is on the team’s radar, but since the Rangers are in still in the playoffs, it’s unlikely he would speak to the Mets during the American League Championship Series.
Rangers’ owner Chuck Greengerg said that Daniels is not going anywhere, according to FOXSports’ Ken Rosenthal. “We’re a family, and we’re going to stay together.” Rosenthal speculates that Daniels will get an extension.
Daniels has previously been mentioned as a successor to the fired Omar Minaya in New York since he has an opt-out in his contract that allows him to leave the team if the Rangers change owners.
The Mets met with Boston Red Sox assistant GM Allard Baird on Tuesday, and have MLB consultant Sandy Alderson, Chicago White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn, and former Arizona Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes and Los Angeles Dodgers assistant GM Logan White set to meet with the team sometime this week. The team is also waiting for permission on additional candidates.
