Rumors for October, 2010

Most of you may be watching the San Francisco Giant’s starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner take a lead into the 5th inning in Game 4 of the World Series. It’s safe say he’s been pretty dominant against the Texas Rangers hitters so far. He wasn’t always calm under pressure. Let’s rewind back to June of this year when he lost his cool in a Minor League game. Bumgarner (#40) was ejected and then out of frustration he threw a ball into center field. Check out the video:

Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reported in June that Bumgarner “came unglued” after center fielder Eugenio Valez dropped a pop fly that should have been caught. He later had a problem with the umpires. Here’s the report from an eyewitness:

“Then he got into a beef with the first base umpire over a close play while covering first. Then got into a beef with the second base umpire over a pickoff play at second (in the seventh inning). The second base umpire tossed him after he lost his cool. He had to be physically restrained from the umpire by his teammates.”

You’ll notice on the upper-edge of the screen, about the 0:50 mark, a ball is thrown towards center field.

The bidding for pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma starts on November 1st according to NPBTracker Twitter account. The Akuten Golden Eagles are hoping for a posting fee of $16mm-$17mm.

Once a team posts the highest posting fee, they then have to negotiate a contract with the 29 year old pitcher.  Iwakuma posted a 2.82 ERA over 201 innings this past season.  That accomplishment marked Iwakuma’s fourth straight season with an ERA of 3.40 or lower.

The new Blue Jays manager, John Farrell, is a big fan of Jason Varitek and according to Chicago Tribune’s Phil Rogers it’s possible that Farrell could push the Jays to bring the catcher to Toronto.

Varitek’s future with the Red Sox is in serious doubt. The Red Sox recently signed Jarrod Saltalamacchia and they will likely bid big to bring Victor Martinez back.

For the 2011 season the Jays could have an opening at catcher with John Buck declaring free agency. The team will likely have J.P Arencibia as their everyday catcher and Jose Molina as their backup catcher. Varitek could serve the Jays organization as a third catcher, a DH or a first baseman.

The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson says that unless Marlins’ owner Jeffrey Loria changes his mind, which is always possible, the team is now inclined to keep interim manager Edwin Rodriguez as manager.

Last week, team president David Samson said the Marlins will look to announce their new manager after the World Series. In addition to Rodriguez, other possibilities include Tony Peña and Bo Porter.

Rodriguez became the interim manager with the Marlins on June 23, 2010 after they fired Fredi Gonzalez. He stayed as the manager throughout the entire 2010 season after an announcement made by Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria.

Earlier this month, it was believed that the 38-year-old Porter was the Marlin’s leading candidate. It was also believed that Bobby Valentine was the front-runner for the job, but he removed his name from consideration on October 13.

Sources close to Sports Illustrated’s Jon Heyman have listed the following as the Milwaukee Brewers’ current managerial order:

  1. Bobby Valentine
  2. Joey Cora
  3. Bob Melvin
  4. Ron Roenicke

Last week, Wisconsin Radio Network’s Bill Scott said the Brewers had an agreement with Valentine to be the team’s next manager, but the report was eventually denied by the Brewers.

The 45-year-old Cora is said to have left a favorable impression on the Brewers’ front-office. Cora was Ozzie Guillen’s bench coach for the Chicago White Sox for the past four seasons.

The Chicago Tribune’s Phil Rogers says that now that the St. Louis Cardinals’ coaching staff is in place with manager Tony La Russa, pitching coach Dave Duncan and batting coach Mark McGwire, the team is looking to upgrade their infield. The team now has Miguel Tejada on their radar. The addition of Tejada will improve them team at shortstop and third base.

Tejada was acquired in late-July by the San Diego Padres from the Baltimore Orioles for Wynn Pelzer and cash. The 36-year-old is eligible to become a free-agent after the World Series. He hit .269/.312/.381 in 156 between the Padres and Orioles in 2010.

Each year during the World Series, a special day comes around. This day is a day where adults get to act like kids and kids get to eat lots of candy. The day I am speaking of would be none other than Halloween. Each year parents and children of all ages search the Halloween stores for the best costume. The costume that will leave a lasting affect on friends and family members is what people strive to find.

This year as I began searching for that special costume, I came across this picture (twitter from Gordon Keith) that was being passed around. This costume that I speak of brought tears to my eyes because it made me laugh so hard. After seeing this picture, I realized I could only find the second best costume this year as this costume worn by Liam Roybal is hands down one of the best I have ever seen.

He truly looks like Ron Washington’s “mini me.” This kid actually shaved his head to make it look as if he was going bald on top as part of his costume. (And yes, Washington was shown the picture and thought it was amusing) Happy Halloween from all of us at PRO Rumors!

Here’s your Happy Halloween edition from The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo:

– It appears that Triple-A pitching coach Scott Aldred is the front-runner to take over the New York Yankees vacant pitching coach position. The team fired pitching coach Dave Eiland on October 25.

– The Yankees will likely look into adding a bullpen piece or two. On Friday, it was believed that GM Brian Cashman had prioritized a left-handed reliever on his winter to-do list.

– Dave Roberts endorsed Barry Bonds as a future hitting coach. Earlier this week, we heard that Bonds wants to share his gift of hitting with others as a hitting coach, and he hopes to do it with the San Francisco Giants organization.

– Tony Peña is drawing interest from the Florida Marlins as a candidate to be their next manager. Last week, it was said the Marlins were leaning towards keeping interim manager Edwin Rodriguez for one more year.

– ESPN analyst J.P. Ricciardi is talking with the New York Mets and newly named GM Sandy Alderson. When Ricciardi was asked if he was joining the Mets, he said, “Not sure yet.” As for Alderson, he’s expected to be in New York at least until Boston Red Sox’s GM Theo Epstein’s deal expires after the 2012 season.

– The Arizona Diamondbacks are very interested in former pitching coach for the Oakland A’s, Curt Young.

The New York Mets have offered left-handed pitcher Hisanro Takahashi a one-year deal, according to The New York Times’ David Waldstein. Waldstein adds that the deal was likely offered before the Mets hired Sandy Alderson as the team’s general manager.

“We’re going to look at it hard,” Alderson said Friday. “So, we have to make a judgment about what we think he’s worth. The problem is, that if we don’t do something relatively soon, then we’re out of the mix permanently. But he knows that too, so we’ll see.”

The left-handed previously had an October 31st deadline with the Mets to get a deal complete, but that date was moved to November 5. Waldstein says that Takahashi is looking for a two- or three-year deal with New York.
