Ken Rosenthal on Fredi Gonzalez, the Braves, Cubs, Marlins and Omar Minaya
By
On Ken Rosenthal’s lastest full count video, he covers the coaching carousel around the league and various other topics:
- By now, we are all aware that Bobby Cox the manager of the Atlanta Braves will be retiring at seasons end. The Braves have been rumored for months now to want Fredi Gonzalez to take over. The problem is Gonzalez is a wanted man as the Cubs are also said to be interested in him. Rosenthal says that it is possible that Gonzalez could be hired as the next manager, before the Braves season is over. This would allow the Braves to get the man they want.
- The Marlins want their next manager to have a “more dynamic personality” than Fredi Gonzalez. Rosenthal names Bobby Valentine, Jim Fregosi, Wally Backman, and Larry Bowa as potential candidates. Valentine would definitely fit the requirement of a”more dynamic personality” as Valentine once came back into the Mets dugout after he was ejected wearing a disguise.
- New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya is telling friends that he knows his time is all but done as the Mets GM. The Mets could promote assistant GM John Ricco if they decide to promote from the inside. If they select from outside the organization, some names that are creating some buzz is former Rangers and Indians GM John Hart, and Dan Jennings, who is a longstanding Marlins executive.
- Rosenthal quotes an MLB executive as saying Mariner GM Jack Zduriencik is “under siege” in Seattle, as it was reported that Zduriencik knew more about Josh Lueke’s criminal record than he has led on. Rosenthal doesn’t believe the Mariners will fire Zduriencik so quickly but mentions Kevin Towers and Dan Jennings as being possible fits.
