Pittsburgh Pirates may seek external options for long-term closer
ByPittsburgh Pirates GM Neal Huntington said on his weekly radio show that there was ” a ton of interest” in pitchers Evan Meek and Joel Hanrahan at Saturday’s trade deadline.
“Those were guys we had no interest in moving,” Huntington said.
With the trade of right-handed pitcher Octavio Dotel to the Los Angeles Dodgers, the two pitchers will share the closing duties for the rest of the season.
“It’s not closer-by-committee, but we’re not going to lock into one guy,” Huntington said. “We’re in the process of trying to choose our closer, and we want to give both guys a legitimate opportunity.”
The Pirates are trying to figure out who will be the team’s long-term closer for the future. If either Meek or Hanrahan falter, the team “might explore external options” to acquire a closer, according to Rob Biertempfel of the PIttsburgh Tribune-Review.
