Update – New York Yankees interested in Jose Guillen

8/6 18:20: Jack Curry of the YES Network doesn’t expect the Yankees to have any interest in adding Guillen.
8/6 08:44: The New York Post’s George A. King III says the Yankees aren’t shutting the door on acquiring Kansas City Royals’ DH/OF Jose Guillen. Guillen, 34, was designated for assignment by the Royals yesterday. Guillen is expected to clear waivers since he is owed roughly $3.9 million for the remainder of the season.
One of the bigger problems with Guillen is the personality that he brings to the table. Yesterday, an executive close to Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated says “no contender” should take Guillen because his personality and clubhouse reputation may be the second worst to Milton Bradley. However, a person that knows Guillen says a seven-week stint in New York wouldn’t be a problem.
“If he is playing, all you have to do is leave him alone,” the person said. “He has enough power and bat speed to get through. He has always been able to hit the fastball but has been injury prone in the outfield.”
Guillen is in the final season of a three-year, $36 million deal. He has 16 home runs, 62 RBIs and batting .255.
