New York Mets OF Carlos Beltran clears waivers

By Allan

New York Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran has cleared trade waivers on Monday, according to a source close to Jon Paul Morosi of FOXSports.

The Mets can now trade the 33-year-old Beltran, but it is unlikely since he has a full not-trade clause. The fact that the veteran outfielder cleared waivers was no surprise. Beltran has more than $20 million owed to him between this year and next. He is in the next-to-last year of his seven-year, $119 million contract, so given that he’s hitting .195/.300/.312 with 1 home run and 7 RBIs, most teams would not take the chance of claiming him via waivers because the Mets will likely just give him away.

In fact, earlier this morning, we heard “the Mets would be open to trading [Carlos] Beltran this winter.” Waldstein added, “the Mets are ready to let Beltran go right now, for nothing in return, if a team claims him off waivers.”
