Matt Kemp’s agent thinks Dodgers would be better off trading outfielder

By Allan

The agent of Los Angeles Dodgers’ outfielder Matt Kemp, Dave Stewart, spoke out about the unfair treatment of his client.

It’s almost like it’s open season on Matt, and it’s not right,” Stewart said in a phone interview (via Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times). “It’s a bunch of back-seat crap.”

“I’m almost to the point — and maybe so are the Dodgers — where I’m thinking that this just isn’t going to work,” Stewart said. “The Dodgers have gaps on this team, and maybe they could fill them by trading Matt. It could be good for the team, and good for the player.”

Kemp has been benched and publicly berated by team personnel. Plaschke says coaches Bob Schaefer and Larry Bowa have been critical of Kemp’s fundamental deficiencies. In late April, GM Ned Colletti threw the outfielder under the bus for the team’s poor performance. At the time Colletti said, “the baserunning’s below average. The defense is below average. Why is it? Because he got a new deal? I can’t tell you.”

Stewart said that he would never formally ask the Dodgers to trade his client, but he wonders if Kemp could succeed in a negative environment.

“No, I have no plans to trade him,” said Colletti when asked about Kemp. “He’s got a chance to be one of the best players in the history of the franchise.”

Kemp, 25, signed a two-year, $10.95 million contract this spring.
