Ken Rosenthal on Manny, the Cardinals, Dusty Baker and Joe Torre

By Ryan

Here’s a quick run down of Ken Rosenthal’s latest MLB Full Count video:

-Manny Ramirez is improving health wise and it is possible that he could go out on a rehab assignment within the next week.  It is safe to say that the only interest in him given his injuries this season would come from an AL Team (so he could DH and stay away from the field).  Rosenthal speculates that the Red Sox could potentially put a claim in on Manny just to block other contenders like the Rays from obtaining him since they have the worst record (66-51) between the Yanks and Rays and them.  Call me crazy, but I don’t think a reunion with Boston is in Manny’s future.

-The Cardinals are looking for help at 3rd base due to the injury to David Freese.  They plan to give Allen Craig some reps at 3rd base but will also continue to keep a look out on the wavier wire.  The Cardinals (also the Braves) were rumored to have interest in Brandon Inge to cover 3rd for them but Inge was pulled off of waivers yesterday.

-Dusty Baker who is in the final year of his contract has led the Reds to a 65-51 record this year and are currently 1 game back in the Central and are tied for the Wild Card lead.  Baker’s success this year could end up forcing the Reds to give him a substantial raise or could force Dusty to take his managing services else where.

-One manager who will almost for sure not return next year is the Mets Jerry Manuel.  The Mets have under achieved and are 9 games back in the east.  With the Mets managing spot available next year, could Joe Torre be interested in it?  Rosenthal speculates that Torre could return to New York and really stick to the Yankees by winning it all with the Mets.  The Mets are saddled with bad contracts next year to and may not have much wiggle room to sign the impact players that they need which may make Torre turn down the job.
