Ken Rosenthal on Adam Dunn, Boston Red Sox, Dusty Baker and Tampa Bay Rays
ByHere’s the latest summary of Ken Rosenthal’s Full Count Video:
If the Washington Nationals sign Adam Dunn, then the team’s refusal to trade him will make more sense. As of now, rival executives could not figure out what the Nationals were thinking. Had they traded Dunn, they would have saved about $4 million in salary, and another $2 million in draft pick bonuses. The players they would have gotten back would have had Minor League track records and they also would have been closer to the Majors. The 2011 draft is expected to be very deep and Nats’ GM Mike Rizzo excels in identifying amateur talent.
The Red Sox not only tried to trade Mike Lowell to the Yankees at the deadline, but the Sox also discussed a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays for Edwin Encarnacion and a prospect in June. It turns out that the Sox were validated by keeping Lowell around for insurance. If the team stays in contention, the team will go “all-in” in their quest to get a left-handed hitting first baseman to compliment Lowell. The team signed Carlos Delgado to a Minor League deal earlier today, but Rosenthal says that only may be the start. The Red Sox will continue to scour the market for players such as Adam LaRoche or Lyle Overbay.
Red manager Dusty Baker says the team has approached him about a contract extension, but Rosenthal says a deal won’t be easy. Baker earns about $3.5 million per year, and logically he should get a raise due to the team’s improved performance this year. However, Rosenthal says the management team may not want to go much higher. Given the volatility in the managerial ranks, the Reds may go in another direction.
Jeremy Hellickson gives the Tampa Bay Rays a sixth starting option in 2011, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the team will have a surplus of starting pitching for a possible trade. The Rays aren’t quite as deep after the 2008 season. Rosenthal says the team should keep the pitching depth. They should start five and keep one in the bullpen in the event of an injury.
