According to the Kansas City Star’s Bob Dutton, the Royals have designated Jose Guillen for assignment. Kansas City now has 10 days to place Guillen on waivers, trade him or release him.

Guillen has about $4 million left on his $12 million contract before he becomes a free agent after the season. The Tampa Bay Rays, San Francisco Giants and the Atlanta Braves have been mentioned in his rumor mill before the July Trade Deadline. Despite playing most of his games as designated hitter this season, Guillen regularly plays the outfield and has a solid arm.

Guillen, 34, was hitting .255/.314/.429 this season for the Royals.
