Jeff Francoeur open to trade to get more playing time

By Allan

New York Mets outfielder Jeff Francoeur has told the club through his representatives that he is interested in being traded to a team that would play him more. Both sides confirmed the request, according to Andy McCullough of The Star-Ledger.

“We want to play every day,” Francoeur’s agent Molly Fletcher said yesterday. “We prefer to play in New York. But if we’re not going to play every day in New York, we absolutely welcome the opportunity to play every day somewhere else.”

Francoeur has been downgraded from starting outfielder to bench player who will platoon with rookie outfielder Fernando Martinez. Francoeur will likely starting when the team faces left-handed pitching.

Francoeuer has been the subject of trade rumors throughout July. However, many of those talks were shelved when Jason Bay was placed on the disabled list. When Bay returns, Francoeuer will likely get less playing time. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN said in late July that the New York Mets think they can trade Francoeur in August. There were talks of him being shipped off to Kansas City, especially since Francoeuer has a relationship with the Royals GM Dayton Moore from their time in Atlanta together.
