Update – Francisco Rodriguez charged with third-degree assault after altercation with father-in-law – suspended 2 days

8/12 13:26: Rodriguez appeared at a Queens courthouse on Thursday afternoon to face assault charges. He was released without bail and told to stay away from his father-in-law. The Mets also suspended the closer for two days, according to ESPN.com news services.

“Ownership and the organization are very disappointed in Francisco’s inappropriate behavior and we take this matter very seriously,” Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon said.

Rodriguez will lose $125,683 of his $11.5 million salary.

8/11 21:46: Jeremy Schaap of ESPN (via Adam Rubin of ESPN) says that Francisco Rodriguez will be charged with third-degree assault.

The Associated Press adds that the family member (Rodriguez’s father-in-law) that Rodriguez scuffled with had minor injuries.

8/11 20:36: According to Andy Martino of the New York Daily News, the Mets have confirmed that there was an altercation involving family members of closer Francisco Rodriguez. The closer told the Daily News reporter “Mind your own f— business.”

Martino added that Rodriguez had to be physically removed by security after an altercation in the family lounge.

In a statement by the Mets (via Adam Rubin of ESPN):

“There was an incident between Francisco Rodriguez and his family tonight at the ballpark. He was questioned by police and all other questions pertaining to this incident will be referred to the police department.”
