Update – Carlos Delgado Rumors: Red Sox could sign Delgado tonight
By8/6 18:55: Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe tweets, “Delgado would need a week or 2 to get timing down, fielding down, his agent told me. As for signing, ‘It could be as early as tonight.’”
8/6 13:05: Carlos Delgado worked out for the Red Sox today at Yankee Stadium, agent David Sloane told Mark Hale of The NY Post. Sloane said Delgado has worked out for other teams as well as the Red Sox. He did not provide any insight as to how the workout went.
Nate Taylor of the Boston Globe says left-handed hitting Casey Kotchman could be a candidate too.
8/5 11:08: According to a source close to Bruce Levin of ESPNChicago.com says the White Sox have had extensive talks with Delgado.
“I thought this guy was building houses in Puerto Rico,” White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said Thursday. “[GM Ken Williams] hasn’t talked to me about it.
“If they did it, he has to go to the minor leagues first. He hasn’t played in a couple of years. He has to prove people he still can play and is healthy. Maybe he can help. I don’t expect anything to help me right now.”
If the White Sox sign Delgado, he would be used as their primary left-handed designated hitter.
8/5 06:33: Now that the trade deadline has passed and as we approach the waiver wire deadline new names are starting to surface. Carlos Delgado is the latest name to kicked around. The White Sox are showing the most interest, with the Rockies, Mariners and Red Sox as other potential suitors.
Delgado, coming off arthroscopic surgery on his right hip, has not played since May 10, 2009. He has received two minor-league offers and would need a couple of weeks in the minors to get ready, according to his agent, David Sloane.
The Red Sox are awaiting word on first baseman Kevin Youkilis, who is seeking additional opinions on the torn abductor muscle in his right thumb. If Youkilis is lost for the season, Delgado could become an option.
The Rockies’ interest in Delgado, according to a source, hinges on the health of first baseman Todd Helton, who was activated from the disabled list Tuesday. Delgado would make sense for the Rockies if Helton again struggled with lower back stiffness and weakness in his legs.
The Mariners, who traded first baseman Mike Sweeney to the Phillies on Wednesday, want to see Delgado work out before determining whether to pursue him, a source says.
Delgado wants to play for a team that is in a playoff race (sorry Mariners) and also once promoted, he wants to play on a regular basis. His agent David Sloane said Delgado could be ready within a couple of weeks.
